Nest Outdoor wired Camera installation through the wall?

Peggy

Currently my house is gutted. I want to prewire it for the outdoor nest cam. Has anyone done this or does anyone have any advice on this matter? I do not want to run wires on the outside of the house. The installation video gives no guidance on this type of install. I think I read that the wire does not unplug from the camera itself. Is that true? Are the cables included rated to run through walls?

May I suggest, since you have the opportunity to wire, you might want to consider using the Nest Cam Floodlight product and you will have both the camera (which is always wired) and the floodlight together. Simply pick places that you want to view an area, like the front door area, or around your cars, or the corners of your house, then simply put in a junction box where you want the cameras/floodlights to go. The best spots are around any access points (like a basement door or windows, and around any hidden spots. You do not have to have a switch and they can be hot wired (always on). I installed 6 of the floodlight nest cams and replaced my existing floodlights, so I have a switch that I can turn them off, but that is not necessary. It is nice since they never need charging, plus the light comes on if there is motion and lights everything up!

We have some of the old (non-battery) Google Nest Outdoor Cameras (which are no longer being sold by Google) where I ran the cable through the wall of our garage by drilling a hole, feeding the cable through the wall, and then sealing the hole with caulk. I think the hole was a 7/8 inch hole; it had to be large enough to feed the USB plug on the cable through the wall, since the cable does not unplug from the camera. The cable is then secured to the studs on the inside of the garage, but you wouldn't want to do this inside a finished house.

I suppose you could do the same on a garage with the new (2021) Google Nest Camera Battery, where the optional power cable does unplug from the camera, but your hole through the wall would have to be large enough for the smaller plug that connects to the camera to fit through the wall.

None of that, I suppose, is of much help with the walls on a house.

The new Google Nest Floodlight Camera gets wired directly into an electrical outlet on the outside of your house or garage, just as a conventional floodlight fixture would.
