Nest Wired Doorbell Gen 2 - Microphone Issue

Just installed the Generation 2 Nest Doorbell (Wired), replacing my Generation 1 which had stopped working after many years.  Installation went fine, but when I turn the microphone and audio recording settings on, the doorbell streams live audio through my Nest Hub.  So for example, I'm listening to the kids across the street playing hockey in their driveway.  The only way to make it stop is to turn off the Microphone, which then disables audio recording and disables my ability to talk to people that ring the doorbell, or to record audio of what they are saying or doing.

Has this happened to anyone else and are there any solutions to this issue?

If we livestream any of our 1st or 2nd gen Google Nest cameras or doorbells, the livestream on our Nest Hubs has always included audio.  Why wouldn't it?  You can, however, turn down the volume on your Nest Hub.

My Gen 1 Doorbell, when controlled through the Nest App had a setting where it would "wake up" when someone came near the front porch, and the audio would only be on then.  Now, with Gen 2 through the Home App, it seems like my choice is either on or off, particularly with the microphone.  But I feel like I'm missing something - the setting choices seem so basic.  Is there a way to have the microphone only operate when someone is near the doorbell, or when someone rings the doorbell?  The microphone button when I'm watching the video is inoperable unless I go back into settings and turn it on, do I have to do that now everytime there's someone at the door that I need to communicate with?

Curious. I don't think the audio feed on our three 1st gen Google Nest Hello Doorbells is silent until they "wake up" when someone is near. When we're watching one of our doorbells on our Nest Hub or it the Google Nest app or Google Home app, we can hear the wind blowing if it is windy.

Since we have 1st gen Nest Hellos and NOT the 2nd gen Google Nest Doorbells, I don't know how the microphone icon works on the newer doorbell on either the Nest Hub or in the Google Home app. On our Nest Hellos, the microphone option is always present, defaulted to off, and is always operable when watching on our Nest Hubs.  In the Google Nest app the microphone option only appears if turn our phone to landscape and tap the screen.  In the Google Home app, the microphone option appears as soon as we turn our phone to landscape.
