Having had two nest cams for a couple of months with no problems charging them, suddenly the original charging cable that came with them stopped working. I bought a new charging cable, which powered up the battery of one of them as expected. But the other camera is charging very slowly and an error message says to use a compatible cable for fastest charging. I purchased it from google. What gives?

Hi Mv, I'm an end user like you. Out of curiosity if you swap the cables does the camera that is failing charge correctly?
In either case I believe you will need to open an official support ticket with Google as they don't really monitor this user forum. Here is the link to use:
