Nest doorbell (battery) - slow notifications

Pete_L
Community Member

We've had a Nest doorbell (battery) for over a year and recently the notifications have started to arrive really slowly. For example, today I walked up my driveway, saw the bell light up, unlocked the door and stepped inside the house before my phone chimed in my pocket - a delay of around 20 seconds. As a test I then stepped outside, pressed the bell, heard the bell ring outside but it was around ten seconds before my two Nest Mini speakers and my phone played the doorbell sound.

For info, the notifications are delayed on both my phone (Pixel 7 Pro, regardless of whether I'm connected to WiFi or mobile data) and also the Nest Mini speakers in the house.

Things I've tried...

* Restart the doorbell

* Restart the Nest Mini speakers.

* Restart my wireless router (speed is 73mbps down, 18mbps up)

Google Home app is version 2.67.1.8

Any ideas?

Thanks Pete_L,

Thanks for taking some steps beforehand, these are of great help! Let's see what’s going on — could you try turning off and on the notifications for the seen events in the Google Home app?

Give these steps a try:

  1. Open the Google Home app and click your camera thumbnail.
  2. Go to Settings > Events > Seen events.
  3. Turn off and on "Your notifications" option for People, Animals, Vehicles, or Motion.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

JT

Hi. Tried that and no change. This morning I walked out of my house past the doorbell (heard it click as it woke up when I passed), got into my car and started to move away, and the car was moving when my phone notified me that I'd been seen. Altogether it was about 20 seconds delay.

It's only recently become unbearably slow. Nothing has changed in the house, such as with the network, and it's caused problems where someone has rung the bell and by the time our Nest speakers or phones have chimed the visitor has gone. Has there been a recent firmware update to the bells? Ours is on 1.65.

Just timed the delay. Pushed the bell and it was 12 seconds before my phone and our Nest speakers chimed. That's not right, is it?

Hey there,

Got it — thanks for sharing the information with us! If there are other apps running in the background of your phone, close all of them. Restart your phone, turn it off for 60 seconds, then turn it back on. If you still experience delayed notifications try it with cellular data.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

JT

You're missing a crucial detail here...

The delay happens on *all* of our devices - our phones (Pixel 7 Pro) *and* our Nest speakers, so it's not an issue with my phone. The delay has only started happening in the last couple of weeks. Nothing has changed in the house, and we regularly restart our phones, plus the router has been restarted too (and the speakers) so I suspect it's an issue with the bell (firmware update?) or Google Home maybe.

I've got exactly the same.. 520mbs up and 500mbs down fibre internet but over the past 3 to 4 weeks we now have a 5 to 10 second delay between pressing doorbell and the internal chime on Nest speakers and phone. It used to be about a 1 second delay but now the delay is much longer.. please help us fix.

I have the same problem, for a couple of weeks the doorbell notifications arrive with extreme delay, either when the doorbell rings or when a person passes in front of the doorbell.

Same issue on my brand new best doorbell battery, slow to chime on my nest minis and hubs

Hello Juni. We still have a delay between someone pressing the button and the internal speakers in home chiming. This can be 5 to 10 seconds in my case which is very slow.

I have very fast internet and all devices are Google Home - from doorbell, to WiFi, to speakers. There use to be a 1 second delay at most which was fine.. but in past month this is now much longer. There is no update or fix coming from Google and we expect this to be resolved..

Do you have advice on how to contact Google technical support directly? Community support is great but clearly we need to get more help on this topic. Thanks

Same issue happening here, still no change to my previous reports.  Yesterday we left the house and walked up the road, and were maybe 15 metres away from the house before our phones beeped in our pockets with the notification that somebody was seen.  This was a delay of maybe 20 seconds.  Up until a month or so ago it was maybe a couple of seconds between an event occurring (person seen, bell being pushed) and notifications arriving on our phones or, in the case of bell pushes, our phones and our Nest Mini speakers.

Nothing has changed with our home network - no new devices installed or removed, no configuration changes, no firmware updates on the router.  We've restarted the router multiple times, so it isn't that.  We've restarted our phones (Pixel 7 Pro) multiple times, and the issue is the same with both of them, so it isn't an issue with one of the handsets.  The delay is the same on the Nest Minis, and they've been rebooted several times too without any improvement.   I've also restarted the doorbell multiple times (pin in the hole in the back until the white light comes on) and that hasn't changed it either.  Clearly something has changed with either the doorbell firmware for everyone, or the way that notifications are triggered at the Nest end.  Something needs to be done to fix it anyway.

Hi Juni,

I've filled the form out previously a few weeks back. It may have been on a different support thread but on the same topic of delayed chime.

Thanks

Do you have any iOS devices? I noticed that my GF's iPhone never missed a beat while my Pixel 7 starting experiencing the delay over a month ago and hasn't been fixed.

Pete_L

No.  And to reiterate, the delay is happening on our Pixel 7 Pros AND our Nest Mini speakers.  It's not the Pixel 7 Pros which are the problem here.

I'm having the same issue with my Pixel 7 notifications. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned a difference in delayed notifications between Android and iOS but on iOS it's immediate. This delay for Android only occurred the last couple months for me.

I am having the same problem. Tried all of the above, and nothing changed. I had the doorbell for almost two years, Finally gave in and bought a new doorbell and the problem persists.

Google must definitely refund you for the new doorbell.. this problem is software related and almost certainly related to an update released but direct contact with tech support seems to be blocked.. we only have access to community support who despite their best intentions keep offering the same clueless advice like "try another phone" or "reset your wi-fi"..
