Nest doorbell gen 2, no chime in house if connector puck installed

If I install the connector “puck” the internal chime doesn’t sound. With it removed everything works correctly. Is. It really necessary to use the connector? What kind of damage can result without it?

Google Nest says: "The Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) and Nest Doorbell (wired) must be installed with the chime connector included in the box. The Nest Doorbell (battery) doesn't need the chime connector for wired or battery-powered installation."  (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247132)

I've seen posts from other Google Nest customers in this forum indicating they discovered their chime connector was faulty because the doorbell only worked WITHOUT the chime connector.

Another possibility is that your doorbell transformer is inadequate.  Along with other customers in this forum, we upgraded our very old transformer to a 16V 30VA transformer several years ago.
