Nest doorbell wired 2nd gen and nvidia shield tv

Malechai

Hello, I read that I should be able to stream my new doorbells video to chromecast to view on my TV.  When I ask google via voice to show me the doorbell on shield, it says ok and shield starts to load but it ends up showing a Grey screen with a video camera with a line through it.  How do I get the video stream to work?

Thanks

Thought I'd finish this thread with the outcome of the email conversation with support for anyone who may find this through a search in the future.

I received the following statement:

....a Google Chromecast is necessary to sync your devices.

Unfortunately, TVs equipped with Chromecast but not Google Chromecast are not compatible with Google smart home devices.

So it turns out I was right when I said "I'm starting to feel that this isn't a me problem and more a forced incompatibility with devices not made by google".

Hi Malechai,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I'm sorry to hear you're seeing a gray screen when trying to stream your new Nest doorbells to your Nvidia Shield TV. Don't worry; I'm here to help! Just to get started, I have a couple of questions that will help me understand this situation better. Can you please help me answer the next questions?

  • Does your Nvidia Shield TV have Chromecast built-in?
  • What's the model of your Nest doorbells?
    • Nest Doorbell (wired)
    • Nest Doorbell (battery)
    • Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen.)

In the meantime, if you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further!

Best regards,

Nery.

I have the nest doorbell wired 2nd gen

The nvidia shield tv is chromecast built in yes.  Since posting this, I have the same experience when trying to stream the doorbell video to my hisense android tv (with chromecast built in).   All other casting to these 2 devices works fine.

Hi Malechai,

Thanks for your quick response and for sharing this useful information!

Let's work through this together. Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Use your voice remote and say, "Hey Google, sync all my devices."
  • Ensure both your TV and Nest doorbell are connected to the same WiFi network.
  • Can you share the exact command you use to stream the doorbell to your TV?
  • Do you get any notification that the camera is offline or unavailable?

If you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further!

Best regards,

Nery.

Hi thanks for trying to help, I appreciate it.

  • I completed the sync all my devices command. Unfortunately no change.
  • My Nvidia shield android box and my hisense android tv are connected to the same network as my doorbell
  • I ask google home speaker "hey google, show me the doorbell on shield" and "hey google, show me the doorbell on bedroom tv". In both cases, google says "Alright, streaming the front door doorbell on shield [or bedroom tv]".  At this point each device appears to try because the screen goes black with a loading symbol but then it turns Grey with a video camera icon with a line through it.
  • No notification the doorbell is offline or unavailable. If I open the home app on any of the phones or tablets in the house, the doorbell video is displayed.

Hi there!

I understand you’re having trouble streaming your Nest Doorbell video to your Nvidia Shield and Hisense TV. It can be frustrating when technology doesn't work as expected. We'll do our best to help you resolve this issue.

While both devices have Chromecast built-in, there might be specific compatibility issues or software bugs preventing the stream.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Restart Devices: Do a Power Cycle to your Shield. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches.
  2. Update Device Software: Ensure that your Nvidia Shield, and Hisense TV are running the latest software versions. Outdated software can sometimes cause compatibility issues.
  3. Try a Different Chromecast Device: If you have another Chromecast device (e.g., a Chromecast with Google TV), try casting the doorbell video to it. This can help isolate whether the issue is specific to your Shield or Hisense TV.
  4. Check for Network Interference: Try temporarily disabling other devices on your network that might be interfering with the Wi-Fi signal.
  5. Factory Reset (Last Resort): If none of the above steps work, you might need to factory reset your Nest Doorbell or your Shield/Hisense TV. However, this will erase all settings and data, so make sure to back up any important information first.

By following these steps and considering the additional factors, you should be able to resolve the issue and successfully stream your Nest Doorbell video to your Nvidia Shield or Hisense TV.

Regards,

Brandon.

Hi thanks again for trying to help.

  1. Restarted both devices,  doesnt help.
  2. both devices have the latest android update available.
  3. Unfortunately don't have another chromecast device to try.
  4. Definitely no interference.  Wifi signal is strong on both devices.
  5. Going to skip this step right now.

My doorbell is only a few days old. My tv and shield work with casting with every  other device I have, just not the doorbell.

Heres a question - Has anyone else got their doorbell casting to a NON chromecast with google tv device?  I'm starting to feel that this isn't a me problem and more a forced incompatibility with devices not made by google

Hello, thanks again for the continued troubleshooting assistance.

  • I ran speed tests with fast.com on both devices and have screenshots of each result if needed.  Both have results capable of streaming 4k video.   My internet providers modem/router doesn't allow me to separate the 2.4 and 5ghz wifi networks unfortunately so I can't force devices to choose a specific network.
  • I've restarted the router with no change.

Since the situation persists, I've filled out your form with a link to this thread.

Thanks again
