Presence sensing not working for camera

slg49ers

Presence sensing isn't working for my indoor camera. I have it turned on and have use phone location enabled. I have location setting to always allow on my phone. I have turned off home presence in app and turned back on. I have disabled/enabled location settings on phone. I have uninstalled/reinstalled app and it still doesn't recognize my phones location. It doesn't automatically turn on when I leave and it doesn't turn off when I get home. It was working up until about a few months ago when I realized I wasn't getting notifications that it noticed movement (since I have a dog).

Any help is appreciated. I just want to get it working again.

Hi @slg49ers,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I apologize for the delay and that Presence Sensing isn't working with your Nest camera. I'd be happy to help!

To better assist you, I'd like to ask a few questions:

  • What is your mobile device model?
  • Are you using the Nest app or the Google Home app?
  • What generation of Nest camera do you have (first or second)?
  • Have you received any notifications lately?
  • Do any other family members with camera access receive notifications?
  • Has the camera been moved lately?
  • Are there any Activity zones set up?

In the meantime, you can check out our Help Center to learn more about presence sensing and Nest phone location.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Thank you for responding.

My phone is an iphone 14. I have a 2nd generation camera. I use the home app. Nobody else is connected to the camera. I have not moved the camera not have I changed any settings. I have the camera set up to send notifications for movement.

Hi @slg49ers,

Thanks for following up! I'd be happy to help with the Presence sensing!

To gather more information, could you please provide the following details:

  • What type of Nest camera do you have (battery or wired)?
  • Are there other devices (thermostats, Protect, Nest speakers, and displays) contributing to Home and Away?
  • Are there other devices signed in to the same account, such as iPads or tablets, that have been left at Home?
  • Have you recently been at home for an extended period of time, like a week or more? Sometimes, this can interfere with the presence-sensing of the Home or Away.

For now, I'd suggest the following:

  • Make sure your Nest camera is online through the app.
  • Ensure the Presence sensing is set to 'Allow this home to use phone locations". You can refer to the next article: About presence sensing and how to manage your data.
  • Check that the location services are enabled. For instructions, you can check out this article: Troubleshoot phone location for routines.
  • Check that your home address and pinned location are correct in the Google Home app by going to Settings > Tap the name of the home you’re in > Home address > Type in the address, then drag the map so that the pin is on your home.
  • Check if there are multiple devices signed into the same account. Being signed into multiple devices at once can cause inconvenience with Home and Away behavior.
  • Check to see if the app recorded any activity in history view by going to the Google Home app, then go to Activity and scroll or filter to the date that Home and Away did not work as expected.
  • If you recently changed your phone device to a new one, re-installed the Home app, and enabled the location services for the Home app.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

I have a wired camera with no other smart devices. My phone is the only connected device. I have not been at home for an extended period.

Hi @slg49ers,

Thanks for the details you provided. Let's try to fix this!

Just to be sure, could you please let me know if the previous steps worked as expected? If not, please follow these additional steps:

  • Try toggling the phone location in the Home app off. Wait 60 seconds, then toggle it back on and wait another 60 seconds before returning to the app's main screen.
  • If you have any phone optimization modes enabled, such as battery saver or app launch restrictions, try disabling them. If you're unsure, consult your phone's manufacturer for other optimization modes that might interfere with Home and Away geofence reporting.
  • Try restarting your mobile device and clearing the cache for the Google Home app. To do this, go to the Settings icon and choose General. Tap on the section "iPhone Storage." Shortly, all apps and your storage usage will be listed. Choose the Google Home app and clear its cache.
  • Finally, you can try setting up Home and Away again on the Google Home app. You can check out this article: Home & Away Routines.

Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
