Recently purchased Net Cam installed in living room battery only lasts 2 weeks

How long should a nest camera wireless battery last when fully charged in our living room. I have it set to only alerting us when we are out of town. I'm intentionally not getting feed notifications every time someone walks into the living room. A full charge is only lasting 2 weeks. The outdoor camera pointing at our driveway lasts 3 months with a constant notification setting. Please advise if you think I should return this camera or try a different setting.

Hey MikeFields123,

Battery life depends on factors like activity, temperature, and selected camera settings. To extend your camera’s battery life, you can adjust its video quality, length of video clips, and time between recorded events. You can also live stream less often, and use activity zones to monitor specific areas.

Here are some typical scenarios.

Nest Cam (battery):
Busy: About 1.5 months battery life (about 20 - 25 recorded events per day)
Typical: About 3 months battery life (about 9 - 12 recorded events per day)
Quiet: About 7 months battery life (about 2 - 4 recorded events per day)

Thanks,

Archie

Hey there,

I just wanted to follow up to see if you still need our help. Please let us know as we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thanks,

Archie

With the adjusted settings, it's still only lasts 2 weeks. That's why I'm thinking is a bad battery.

Thank you for the follow-up Archie. We are still experiencing an issue with this one camera only lasting 2 weeks. What do you suggest? Warranty service or a settings issue? Mike

Hi MikeFields123

We’re sorry you’re still having trouble with your Nest Camera (battery). Let’s sort this out. Is the camera exposed to extreme temperatures? How does it feel (hot, warm, cold or normal)? Was there any power outage recently? Also, has it been exposed to direct sunlight?

Thanks for the help, Archie.

Regards,

JT

Hi Archie,

This unit is installed indoors in our living room, so no heat or sunlight issues. This unit is a wireless unit so not sure about the power outages. The initial settings were set for whenever someone walked into the room. We have 2 kids and my wife in the house which the camera would text me every time someone passed by the camera. That happened a lot and the camera battery lasted 2-3 weeks. So, I changed the settings to not alert me and to also only keep up with the recording when we are out of town. I basically use the camera to check in with my kids on the live feed only. The battery still only lasts 2-3 weeks.

Hey there,

I’m sorry for the delay. Thanks for the information. Could you factory reset your camera then let us know how it goes?

Thanks,

JT

How do I factory reset the camera?

A consumer rep at google in New York called me earlier this week to troubleshoot if I need to return the item. He was supposed to call me back and has not. Such a strange company "Google". No direct phone number to speak with a tech. They have to call you. You have been great with your time and I'm thankful. However, I will never buy another google product again if this is how they think that the world should buy their products and then wait for their people to reach out to us when convenient.  I charged the unit the other day and it is already dead after 4 days. Bad battery?

Hi there,

Don’t give up on us yet. Let’s dig deeper into this — follow the steps below to reset your camera to its default settings.

Use the reset button:

  1. Locate the reset button at the back of the camera.

Tip: The reset button on the Nest Cam (battery) is located at the back of the camera head.
  2. Press and hold the button:
    • At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you’ll hear a countdown tone.
    • At 12 seconds, the status light will be steady, solid yellow while the camera starts the factory reset, and you’ll hear a confirmation tone.
  3. Release the button. Your camera will restore to its factory settings.
  4. After the factory reset, your camera will appear as “Offline” in the app until you remove it.
  5. To remove it from the app, open the app, tap on the device, then tap Settings Nest settings icon > Remove device > Confirm.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

JT

just did the reset. I had to charge the camera again as it only lasted 4 days. I'll let you know how it works out. Thank you for your help!

Mike

Hello there,

Sounds good! Keep us posted.

Best regards,

JT

Now I'm trying to reconnect the camera after having reset it. I lost the QR code sticker that came with the camera. I still have the box with  the serial number on it. I have the QR code to the 2nd camera that came with the box, but that one is used outdoors and not an issue.

Hey there,

Thanks for keeping us posted. Let us know if anything comes up.

Thanks,

JT
