Set Digital Zoom and Activate Noise Notifications

MalloryLesch

Is the new indoor google camera capable of staying zoomed in on a specific frame and monitoring for noise notifications?

I was previously using the Nest App to monitor and control my google home products, but recently purchased a new camera. The camera is not compatible with the Nest App so I have been learning to use the Google Home App instead.

On my old camera, I was able to “set digital zoom” to show a specific portion of my daughters room at night. This allowed me to receive notifications if she made noise or moved out of her bed.

I would like to be able to zoom in with my new camera, but haven't been able to figure out how to use this feature in the Google Home App. I have also been unable to turn on notifications specifically for noise. It seems to only have notifications for movement. These two features are very important to me.

Unfortunately, the Google Home app does not have the Google Nest app's "Enhance" feature, which enables you to permanently zoom your camera's view. And it doesn't have the same sound options either.

Hello everyone,

@MalloryLesch, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. Sound detection recognizes certain important categories of sounds, like a dog bark or a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm. It can distinguish between these sounds and other loud sounds you might hear. Sound or heard events  for smoke and CO alerts are only available on Nest Cam (wired), Nest Cam (battery) with wired setup, and Nest Cam Indoor 2nd gen when you have the Nest Aware subscription.

Zooming in or out won’t change the footage that’s uploaded to the Nest service, and it won’t change what appears for other people who have access to your camera in the app. Your camera will still stream its entire wide-angle view. Just the same, the camera’s entire view will still appear in recorded and saved video.

To zoom:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. In your camera’s Live or History view, you can:
  • Spread or pinch two fingers to zoom in or out.
  • Double tap to zoom in. Do it again to zoom in further.
  • Drag one finger to pan around.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Emerson

Hi MalloryLesch,

I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. How's it going with your Nest Camera? Were you able to read the information I've shared? Also, were you able to perform the steps I’m suggesting? We'd be glad to hear from you.

Best,

Emerson

Hi Emerson,

Unfortunately your response does not help me. It seems that the features I loved about my first Nest camera are no longer available to me with the new Indoor 2nd gen. I use the cameras as a baby monitor. My new camera does not register movement of the baby when he is in the crib and does not pick up on the sound when he cries, even with the Nest Aware subscription. I don’t get notifications like I do with the older camera I use in my first child’s room. The new camera does not meet my needs and I am using a standard baby monitor in its place.

I do appreciate your response even though the product is not meeting my expectations.

Thank you.

Hello MalloryLesch,

I totally understand that these are good features to use with your new Nest Cam (wired), but these features, Enhance and Sound detection, are not available. I'd suggest you submit feedback about it.

Instead of using the Enhance feature to show a specific portion of your daughter’s room at night, you can create an Activity Zone instead. This is a free feature that comes with cameras and doorbells set up in the Home app.

Follow this handy guide: Set up and use Activity Zones.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for the assistance, MplsCustomer and Emerson.

Lance

Hi Lance,

I have been using Activity Zone since I bought the camera, but it doesn’t pick up on my baby’s movement or noise and it does not improve the alerts.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi MalloryLesch,

Thanks for getting back to me. Let’s try the troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Toggle the notifications in the Activity Zone On and Off.
  2. Adjust the edges of the zone to create a smaller one.
  3. Remove the Activity Zone and create a new one.

More information here: Set up and use Activity Zones.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Lance
