Talk and listen broken

divadyasdnil
Community Member

Home app version 3.1.1.14 has broken Talk and Listen on my Nest Doorbell Battery. the Nest Cam battery also has the same problem. Visitors cannot hear my voice but I can hear them. The doorbell and cameras had this issue in 2021 and 2022 and it was recognised by Google, but it was fixed in a Google Home update. The latest Home update to version 3.1.1.14 has broken Talk and Listen on my doorbell and cameras once again. I am using a Samsung Galaxy S21.

Hi divadyasdnil,

Thanks for reaching out. Try reinstalling the Google Home app and observe if it will make a difference. Using another phone will also help us isolate the issue.

Regards,

Juni

Reinstalling the app does not help. The issue does not exist on Apple phones. This is a problem that existed on Samsung phones immediately after the doorbell battery and cam battery were released and was not fixed for well over 12 months. It was fixed with a Home App update but the latest update has broken it again. There are numerous posts on this forum about the issue when it existed previously and it is a shame that Google have broken it again after finally fixing it.

Hi there,

Understood. Try to restart your device. By doing this, it should keep all your settings, and reconnect it to the same Wi-Fi network. This is helpful if it ever freezes, has connection problems, or isn't working normally.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Juni

Done that. And my phone is set to automatically restart once a week anyway. That is not a fix.

Hi there,

Got it. You can factory data reset your Nest doorbell. This erases all your personalized settings, deletes the entire video history, and restores the factory default settings. It won’t automatically reconnect to WI-Fi, and you’ll need to set it up again.

Check out the link for more information.

Thanks,

Juni

Youre suggesting I reset 3 cameras and a doorbell to resolve a problem that only exists in the Home App for Samsung phones? Talk & Listen on the cameras and doorbell works fine with Apple phones. I have tested this using phones belonging to different family members. This suggests the problem is not camera hardware related but in the Home App. Talk & Listen has a history of being broken on Samsung phones. It was highlighted in numerous online journals as well as this forum and was recognised by Google as a problem. It has something to do with the way the Home app is using the microphones on Samsung phones. The latest version of the Home App has reintroduced a problem that previously existed. Advising me to reset the hardware is not a fix. You might as well be telling me to turn it off and on again. Oh wait ... you already did that.

Hi divadyasdnil,

Got it. Check out the steps below and try it. Then let me know how it went by updating this thread.

  1. Check the Google Home app or Nest app permissions see the steps below:
    1. For Android users: Go to the phone’s Settings Apps Google Home or Nest Permissions, and make sure Microphone is enabled.
  2. Test if the device’s microphone is working.
  3. Open the default voice recorder app or any other app that uses your device’s microphone and test the device’s microphone on the app.
  4. Check if the device is connected to a Bluetooth device that may be serving as the microphone.

Regards,

Juni
