Wireless (battery) Doorbell and Nest app

laggingdoorbell

Is it correct in saying  a recent update allowed the doorbell to be used with the Nest app? I noticed you can now add a doorbell via the app but it specifies wired, not wireless (battery). I am still having buffering problems trying to view video. This is a last ditch effort before I go with another brand.

That seems incredibly unlikely; it would be an astonishing development. The Google Nest Hello Doorbell (the older, wired doorbell) has always been installed with the Google Nest app. However, the Google Store says this about the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery): "Requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site." https://store.google.com/product/nest_doorbell_battery_specs?hl=en-US

It really is time to ditch any and all Nest/"Google Home" products. Google's "beta" everything and subsequently kill it off approach has cost me and I know many others too much time, money, and frustration. Their products work best when they are returned and replaced with something else. I have nest products and this year's purchase of the outdoor (battery) camera that only works with the Google Home app was it for me...All google home hubs, minis, Google's Android devices, and acquisitions are just a disappointing waste in the end.

I believe the add doorbell you are seeing in the NEST app is only to be able to add the previous generation NEST HELLO doorbell.  The new Doorbell (battery) will never work with the NEST app.

As for the buffering problems I think your best bet is to open a support ticket with will let you speak one-on-one with a Google Tech on the line.  Be prepared for about 1 hour of trouble shooting with the tech.   Here is the link to get started which will let you escalate to a phone call.

If you get this solved please return here and let us know what the problem was.

I wish I could say it’s firmware or something other than internet speed but I can’t. I kept thinking “How can I stream Netflix in one room, Paramount Plus in the other and surf the net without any issues but I can’t get a steady stream from my door bell”. Then I realized it’s not only DL speed but upload speed as well. Granted upload plays a part in video streaming but with the doorbell I have to upload the stream just to download it again from the app/Google server. If I am off track here let me know, I’ll get back to the drawing board. I live in a rural area with DSL and struggle to upload greater than 1-2Mbps with a download of 10ish.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this, I would love to look into this further for you. The Nest doorbell (battery) is only available to use with the Google Home app. It is not available in the Nest app. Sorry for the inconvenience, but thank you for bringing this to us! Thank you to MplsCustomer and EmptyNester, as well as fatherdad_us for your help on this one.

Best regards,
Brad

Hi there,

Just checking in on this thread and the activity on it. We'll leave this topic open for another 24 hours in case there are any follow-up questions or comments.

Thank you all for checking in. If my Internet speed of 2Mbs upload and 10Mbs down shouldn’t be an issue I am all game to try whatever you’d like me to do.

@laggingdoorbell

If your upload bandwidth is 1-2 Mbps, that might be the problem.

Google Nest says, for the battery doorbell, at High Video, the "maximum upload bandwidth" is 700 Kbps (0.7 Mbps) and during events is 2000 Kbps (2.0 Mbps), and at Max Video, the "maximum upload bandwidth" is 1000 Kbps (1.0 Mbps) and during events is 3000 Kbps (3.0 Mbps)

I noticed the wired version has one more step lower for resolution. Something I would think would benefit a battery unit more than it would a wired one. It’s been on the lowest setting which for me is “high”. I had the audio on too which I just turned off. I do have a Gen2 Nest Hub that I haven’t unboxed yet. Would that offer any more advantages rather than using the Google Home app via an iPhone?

@laggingdoorbell

I don't think a Nest Hub would offer any bandwidth advantage for recording or viewing history, because you still have to upload it, and then download it to view it. I don't know what Google Nest really does when we're viewing live footage while on our home Wi-Fi, either on a phone or on a Nest Hub. That is, does the footage get loaded onto Google Nest's servers and we view the live footage from there, or is it all happening on our local Wi-Fi?  The above page says: "Your camera uses your home internet bandwidth to stream live video to the Nest service in the cloud." but I have no idea what that really means.

I was hoping for another option for lesser quality video, I seem to be right on the border of the min requirements. All I can do is try it at this point. I’ll do so today and update.

@Brad Is there something you’d like me to try?

@laggingdoorbell

You may experience less-than desirable connectivity issues if you have those speeds, but it is the limit for quality. If you can move your Wi-Fi closer to the doorbell, that may help you out.

Brad

Hi there,

Just checking in to see how the conversation is going. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. We'll leave this thread open for a little longer for follow-up questions and concerns.

Best regards,

I have a question,which is preferred for this application 5GHz or 2.4GHz?  I turned off audio, that seemed to help a little.

Hey laggingdoorbell,

Good question! The recommended router settings for the Nest Hello doorbell (wired) is the 2.4 GHz WiFi frequency. Have a look at this article and let us know if you need more help: Update Wi-Fi network and router settings.

Thanks for your help, MplsCustomer, EmptyNester, Brad and Emerson.
