Yet another "why can't I schedule my Google Nest camera" post

Like so many people have posted already, I also really want/need to be able to schedule when my Google Nest camera is on and recording, as I don't need it to be recording during the day when the household is home.

I have one battery camera in the back garden and now it has started to get warmer the garden is used more during the day, and because the camera is always on the battery dropped nearly 50% in just under a week.

I've tried this way of setting up a schedule by doing:

  • Set the camera to on when away presence was detected, which auto sets it to off when home
  • Created a routine to turn the camera off at 8am
  • Created a routine to turn the camera on at 9pm

But this was no good because if you come home after 10pm you turn the camera off, or it will turn off during the day if you are away. Still it worked ok in preserving the battery life despite the flaws and having to sometimes manually turn it on but having to do stuff manually is removing the auto from automation so I ended up binning these settings and having the camera back on full time.

What I need to be able to do though is this:

  • Set the camera to on when away presence was detected, which auto sets it to off when home unless time is between 9pm to 8am
  • Created a routine to turn the camera off at 8am unless away presence is on
  • Created a routine to turn the camera on at 9pm (don't think this needs altering)

Which from the outside doesn't seem like it should be a big thing to implement.

Much like @KcH89 said here I really wish I'd researched this beforehand as I think I would of gone for a different solution that supports scheduling, and I'm surprised that this hasn't gotten more traction from Google, barring "we'll take this as feedback" replies to posts, given the number of posts asking for it.

Google have dropped the ball with their products and software in the last few yers. What is available now is second rate garbage.

I think this from 2021 seems to still be relevant now.

As it stands today, Google’s Nest lineup feels like an absolute mess

Which is hard to argue against, especially when what seems like such a key feature was available for cameras in the old Nest app but is still not available to do in Google Home.

Hi everyone,

I’m sorry for the delay. I totally understand that this is a good feature to use with your new Nest cameras, but this feature is not available. I'd suggest you submit feedback about it. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns; otherwise, I will be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Regards,

Lance
