Android 12 update broke 4k HDR for 4K projector

The chromecast google tv 4k is plugged into an enhanced format HDMI port on my Sony 7.2 receiver and uses ARC to connect to the projector.  Before A12 update, it worked perfectly with 4K HDR content and the projector would auto-sense it and switch to 2160p at 60Hz with HDR.  Since the A12 update, the projector cannot sync the signal and flashes artifacts or just a black picture.  I did not change any of the default Display settings. If I change the HDMI port from Enhanced (to support 4K/HDR) to Standard format, I get a normal picture but without HDR.

I tried other 4K devices and those all worked fine.  Right now this the GCGTV is worthless to me.  Please fix or suggest any Display settings that alleviate this issue. And unless there's a fix update already for A12, I have the latest.

Hello thedoomster.

I am having the same problem after updating to Android OS 12.

When using apps such as YouTube, the apps are trying to output the video in HDR, but the Chromecast does not seem to be outputting the requested HDR video.

Some people on Reddit seem to have solved the problem as shown in the following thread, but it did not improve in my environment.

To be more specific, even after a hardware factory reset, when I set the HDMI port to "Enhanced format" on the AVR, the projector only displays "HDMI No Signal".  Set the HDMI port back to "Standard format", I get the Home screen back but no HDR support.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out and for bringing this up to our attention. I've forwarded this to our team and they're currently investigating the issue. We’ll loop back in once we have an update. Thanks for bearing with us.

Also, I'd suggest you send feedback about this via Google TV and use the keyword "CCT3 HDR not working on Android 12 + [Projector model]". Every bit of feedback helps a ton!

Best,

Jennifer

Thanks JenniferV.  Done!  ABTW, the projector model is an Optoma UHD52ALV.

I'm experiencing the same problem with chromecast 4k on a Samsung QN90A.  HDR only works if I change refresh to 30hz.  HDR at 60hz worked fine before Android 12

Hello jtgoog,

I'm sorry to hear that you're also experiencing the same issue with your Chromecast with Google TV (4K). Please also send feedback about this via Google TV and use the keyword CCT3 HDR not working on Android 12 + [Projector model]". Here's how.

Thanks,

Jennifer

I did the same with my ViewSonic X10-4K, changing the display resolution from 4K 60Hz to 4K 30Hz, and it switched to HDR!

4K 60Hz does not switch to HDR.
Of course, before Android 12, HDR output was available in the same environment and configuration.

After some experimenting with settings, I believe my situation is a bit different than those with other replies on this thread.  I tried changing the refresh (on the GCGTV) to 30Hz and it did not fix the problem.  In my case I have the GCGTV plugged into my Sony STR-DH790 and using ARC passthru to the projector.  It requires the Enhanced HDMI format to support HDR passthru, and as soon as I set it to this format the projector loses the signal completely.  This worked fine before the A12 update.

I also am experiencing a similar issue. Since the Android 12 update I have not been able to stream HDR content using the Chromecast to my TV properly.

I have found that I have to switch the Dolby Vision setting to Low Latency in order for HDR10 content to be streamed properly. This should not be the case since the low latency option should only affect Dolby Vision content.

Please Help!!!

After updating the Chromecast to the latest software I am still unable to stream HDR content properly using Plex.  I still have to select Dolby Vision Low Latency mode in order to get HDR content to stream normally.

Turns out my issue was caused by my AV receiver.  The color space ycbcr setting was set to 8 bit.  I changed it to support 10/12 bit and that enabled full HDR on the Chromecast at 60hz.

I still don't understand how HDR was working before the android update.  It's definitely working now and looks fantastic.

My Sony STR-DN1080's Enhanced HDMI mode already supports 4K/60p 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4K/
60p 4:2:0 10 bit. If I plug another 4K Android TV streamer into the same port, the projector sees the signal correctly and shifts into 2160 HDR mode.  The Chromecast, which is currently being used on an older 4K TV, did receive the latest update from Google but I haven't had a chance to try it with the AVR/Projector yet to see if the issue was corrected.

Tried updated Chromecast (GCGTV) but same error, although it did connect once at 720p.  I could tell the projector was retrying the connection to HDMI2 but could not get a connection.
