Casting from a device to Chromecast with Google TV almost never succeeds on the first try

No one in my household can reliably cast to the Chromecast with Google TV from any app on their device. The Chromecast shows up in the cast menu no problem but it always fails on the first try. Sometimes it will say it's connected but the TV just shows the main Google TV menu, other times it just fails to connect but still seems to wake up the Chromecast to the main menu. Connecting again sometimes works but not always, sometimes it will just play the audio while showing the home page or a loading page within the app. Usually if the app is already open on the Chromecast, it will then work so often we have to hunt out the remote and open the app with it before it will let us cast.

It feels ridiculous how bad something with cast in its name is bad at casting. It's always been a problem with this Chromecast since I bought it 2 years ago but we just used the old Chromecast on the main TV until YouTube blocked signing in on "older devices". My environment is practically fully Google products too. Google Nest WiFi and Pixel phones (2 & 7) or Android tablet.

Doesn't matter which app, YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, it's never a smooth casting experience with Chromecast with Google TV. I almost returned this thing when I bought it but at the time it came with a Netflix subscription that I already redeemed but it's enough that I don't think I'd buy another Chromecast.

Anyone else have this problem? Is there any solution to make casting a smooth single attempt process?

I know it's a stupid question but is the firmware in the Chromecast up to date

Are you using a VPN if so knock it off because it does affect the Chromecast

No VPN, no special settings in my Google Nest Wi-Fi. It has UPnP and IPv6 enabled but I think that's the default settings.

Not at all, I thought I had turned on an auto-update preference so I didn't even think about it but I don't even see an auto-update option so I must be thinking of something else. It turns out I was on Google TV v10 still. I've only given some simple tests but it seems to have sorted it out. Thanks!
