Chromecast “Disconnected Device” after setup?

So my partner gave me his old Chromecast. We’re not sure what generation it is, but it worked fine when he used it at his house. Now we’ve set it up at my house on my TV about four times now, factory reset and all. It still gives me “Device Disconnected” after everything is set up. We get through the wifi and linking and all and when it gets to the tutorial, I can’t cast to “practice casting.”

I understand how casting works, but it doesn’t do anything. It just plays out loud on my phone and won’t connect. I get “nearby device” instead of “Zeal’s TV” if that info is useful to anyone. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated! I was so looking forward to having a working TV in my room for the first time since I was a kid, and now I can’t seem to get it to work! Any advice is appreciated, thanks all!

Is the Chromecast being setup on the same wifi network as your phone, and not a hotspot from the phone itself?  Have you tried rebooting your wifi router and then factory resetting the Chromecast again?  What type of wifi network are you using, and does it combine 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks into one?  If so is AP isolation disabled?

Hey, thank you for your response. Resetting the router didn’t help, and I don’t actually know how to find out the other stuff you asked. I think out wifi has a 5g and a 2g option, is that what you mean?  I’m not sure what AP isolation is or how to enable or disable it.

It would be in your routers setup screen , probably accessed by going to 192.168.0.1 or something similar.  You can look up the address by googling your routers model number.  And yes if there are both a 5 g and 2.4g network  the router could be isolating them from each other, which would cause you to not be able to control devices on seperate networks

Okay so, we do have them isolated but I made sure both my phone and the chromecast are on the same one every time I tried setting it up. I only use the 2G one and made sure to only set it up on the 2G one.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help here, Ashepherdson.

TroublingZeal, I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing an issue with your Chromecast. Please try to forget the network on your phone and reconnect it to the same network as your Chromecast. Reinstalling the Google Home app and rebooting your mobile device might also help.

If the issue persists, please do another reset on your Chromecast then manually connect it to the Chromecast SSID. Here's how: Go to the phone Settings > Open Wi-Fi and connect to the Chromecast SSID (Example: Chromecast1234, Living Room TV, Bedroom TV, etc.) > Go to the Google Home app and try to set up again.

Thanks,

Jennifer
