Chromecast ad overload

ukoda
Community Member

I have used Youtube on several different devices and typically have ads inserted about every 6 minutes.  I brought the latest Chromecast with Google TV to test as a replacement option for three existing STBs that are going EOL soon.  I have noticed the ad cadence is way higher on the Chromecast.  I just watched a 12:45 video where I was served 6 sets of ads for a total of 11 adverts.  That is close to one per minute of viewing time.

Why is the Chromecast being treated differently?  Currently there is no way I will buy two more, I am actually considering returning the one I have as unfit for purpose.  This is just crazy.  It is currently looking like some time and money invested in an RPI solution will pay for itself real quick vs the hours I will be wasting in ad breaks with a Chromecast.

Oh yea, to add insult to injury, the TV part is useless with no support for the streaming the Freeview TV service used here in New Zealand.  The STB boxes from Vodafone being replaced do that fine, so why can't Google use the free publicly available government back nationwide set of streams?

Hi ukoda,

Sorry for your frustrations using the Chromecast with Google TV but this device is not currently officially sold in New Zealand and therefore features, apps language support and more can not be guaranteed to work as they would in an a officially supported region .

I agree that you should return the device to the place of purchase and inform them about the issues that can happen when importing devices from different countries without the full support of the company that makes the device.

Regards,
Cathal

The reason I have not replied is the answer makes it clear that one advert per minute is consider reasonable and if I don't like it I should simply return the product.  The answer kind of left me speechless.  Then when I knew what I wanted to say I reminded of what my mum said as a kid: "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all".  Let me simply say it should not take a marketing genius to work out the reason for future falling usage of Youtube if this is going to be the standard service on new Google products going forward.

Thank you for you time in answer my query, feel free to close this issue as clearly the error is on my part for having too higher expectations of Google products based on dozens of prior purchases dating back to the Nexus One in 2009.
