Chromecast and Google Wifi

Ottomatic

My Chromecast repeatedly disconnects from wifi and then reconnects, only to disconnect again, over and over.

I have tried everything in the forums.  I use Google  Wifi, the access point is close the the Chromecast, I have factory reset the Chromecast, restarted the network, and nothing works. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Update: I have switch Chromecasts and the swapped device exhibits the same behaviour.

Hi Ottomatic,

Thanks for posting and for being a step ahead of us. Based on your description, the issue persists even after switching to another Chromecast device. This could be related to the network now, or else the new Chromecast should have worked. Let’s isolate possible network issues by disconnecting the Chromecast device from your Wi-Fi and connecting it to your phone’s mobile hotspot. Observe if the problem persists.

We look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi Kimy,

Thanks for reaching out. The Chromecasts did connect to my phone hotspot. That led me to move them to a guest network on my Google wifi and the dropped connections are gone.

This isn’t an ideal solution but it’s a fix for now.

So, it seems the Chromecasts have an issue with my household wifi. Any thoughts?

Hello Ottomatic,

Thanks for the reply. I’m glad you finally sorted this out. The objective of that approach is to know if the Chromecast device is working as intended. So that means the Chromecast is not disconnecting, but something (could be from the network or an outside influence) is causing this disconnection. It could be router settings, interference from another device, or a certain source. Let us know if you still have questions.

Cheers,

Kimy

Well, honestly, I do have more questions. What in the Google wifi is causing the Google Chromecasts to disconnect? If it’s an interference issue, how did moving them to the guest network resolve that? They would still be sharing the same radio frequency, no? So if it’s not an interference issue it seems like it may be a Google wifi addressing issue, or a firmware issue. Do you have any thoughts on that?

Hi Ottomatic,

Thank you for your reply. There are numerous factors to consider, and it is difficult to list them all. IP address conflict, DNS or server rejection, etc. are just some of the things I can think of. This situation happens even if almost all devices connected are working at great speed. I suggest you reach out to our friends in the Google Wifi Help Community. Let us know if you still have other concerns with your Chromecast device.

Best,

Kimy
