Chromecast does it own thing

ItsATim
Community Member

Hi,

Since this week we use a Chromecast (with Google TV) 4K and there are a few thing happening.. and we don't know why:

1. The chromecast stops a app and return to homescreen.

2. The chromecast turns off the whole TV.

3. Netflix starts and I can't use the remote anymore.

Does anyone have this problem aswell? Is there a fix for it?

Hey there ItsATim,

I apologize for the late response, and thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix these Chromecast issues? If not, I'd be happy to help figure these out. I'll address each problem one after another.

  1. When you Chromecast is stopping an app and returning to the Home Screen, does this issue occur with one app in particular, or all apps? Regardless, make sure your Chromecast is up-to-date on its firmware. Afterwards, clear out the cached app data on all apps.
  2. This is a setting you can change in the remote settings. Here is how to access those settings: On your TV, press the Home button on the Chromecast remote. Select your profile picture in the top right corner of the screen. Select Settings. Select Remotes & Accessories. Select Set up remote buttons. From here you can change the Power control settings.
  3. For this, if updating the Chromecast and clearing your cached app data didn't help, go ahead and uninstall and reinstall Netflix.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi, I'm sorry for the late reply, was quite busy.

I tried all the steps before I reached out. It's happening less now, since I posted it happen once. It looks like the app is going in standby, is that possible?

Hi ItsATim,

Thanks for coming back to us. It is possible that the device is on standby mode that's why it's happening. How about the issue when your casting Netflix?

Muddi

We found out that it mostly happens when we are streaming from a mobile device and when we are listening via a radio app on the chromecast it self

Hi ItsATim,

Thanks for confirming that it mostly happens when streaming from a mobile device. To narrow things down, what mobile device are you using? Is it an Android or iOS device? Have you tried other mobile devices to see if we can isolate further?

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Dan

Hello!

We tried it with 2 android phones. Mostly happens with my girlfriends one, sometimes with mine!

Hey there,

Could this be an integration between devices? How far are your casting device from your Chromecast with Google TV (4k)? Are both devices near your router/modem? How about if you unplug your Chromecast from the HDMI port for about 2 minutes and plug it back in. See the difference.

It would also help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers, then your Chromecast device and your TV.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Dan

Hey joshmiller83,

Thanks for sharing the link. I'll go ahead and duplicate it here since you have the same issue. This will avoid confusion on where to give you an update.

Also, since all troubleshooting steps have been exhausted, the next thing to do is to fill out this form with all the needed information so we can further check what's going on with your device.

ChromeCast with GTV keeps shutting off the TV but the Chromecast seems to be still running? I press the Home button and the TV turns back on and the CC is sitting at the home screen. The Sleep Timer is set to NEVER!

I think the recent update broke something.
I might buy a new CCwGTV and see if it does the same thing!

Hi joshmiller83,

Sorry to hear that. Could you tell us the current cast version of your Chromecast with Google TV? Also, what are the steps that you've tried so far?

Cheers,

Muddi

And YES before any Community "Specialist" responds with a Copy/Paste GENERIC troubleshooting message, I did all the things!

Reboot - No Change
Factory Reset - No Change

I bought a new CCwGTV and it is doing the same thing with Power TV Off set to NEVER!

Going to try it set to 24 hours and see if the TV will stay online longer.

Firmware Version on the New CC is the same as the last one: STTE.221215.004.A1

We "should" be able to have Videos playing on out TV indefinitely like we did before!

A "NEW" CCwGTV has the same exact issue after updating Firmware to the latest! STTE.221215.004.A1

Hello joshmiller83,

Just one quick final follow up since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let me know.

Best,

Still waiting to hear anything out of my ticket/support request!

I would like to know if my issue is a known issue with the latest update but I don't expect to hear anything from anyone about it. 😞

Yep having exactly the same issue. Logged a support case this morning and they said they would get back to me in 24 - 48 hours. Sounds like I shouldn't hold my breath.

I have 2 Chromecast with Google TV (HD) plugged into two completely different models and age TVs and both will go into standby mode after 4 hours even when I'm streaming the feed from my Nest Outdoor security camera.

Today I was actually able to catch the message that appears. It says "Android TV device will soon turn off. Press any button to keep it on"

This never use to happen before the last update and now it does so pretty clear it's the update that broke it.

I have the same issue. Standby set to never. I don't have an exact timer on it yet, but I get the popup that the Chromecast is going to put the TV to sleep in a few moments if I don't press a button. I'm going to guestimate it happens after about 1 or 2 hours of watching YouTube TV. Has happened numerous times already.
