Chromecast power requirement

Is the 5 Volt, 1 Amp USB power an absolute requirement for Chromecast 3rd Gen.? Mine seems to be working well using 5 Volt, 0.5 Amp USB power.  I have tested with streaming services, Netflix, etc.  My TV is hard-wired to Ethernet and the Chromecast is, of course, WiFi.

Why do you think Google supplied the Google Chromecast 3 with a power adaptor of 1A X 5V?

Because the electronics inside need that current to reach optimum parameters. Emphasis here is on optimum, not minimum.

Ok, understood. My 2nd gen Chromecast has been functioning well for years using USB power.  I know I didn't make this clear in my post but the 3rd gen Chromecast I referred to is a gift to someone and I will advise him to use the power adapter.   Thanks
