Chromecast rebooting daily

Zordrack
Community Member

Please read fully before replying.
What would be able to cause a Chromecast to reboot daily ?
It does not happen at the same time every day but it does happen daily.

And here's where it get's weird.
This is my master bedroom Chromecast and I have replaced the device itself.
New Chromecast rebooted exactly the same way as the old one.
It does not matter if it's casting or it's just on.
It throws up a message saying that it will reboot soon and then it reboots after about 10 seconds.
I am using the original power supply and cable."
I have several (5) Chromecasts in my home and this is the only one exhibiting this behavior.
This has been going on for roughly half a year.

HI,

Do you have that Chromecast powered from the wall?  I am thinking this may be TV related so be sure to use the wall and supplied adapter to power the device.

Zordrack

Yes it is powered using the OEM power adapter plugged into the wall and using the OEM cable.

It is really odd that the newer Chromecast is doing the same as the old one with restarting. How far away from your router is it?

I have a 3 AP Meraki setup.
The closest AP (MR32) is about 10' (3m) away with only sheet rock between it and the Chromecast.
The other Chromecasts are either about the same or further away from their nearest AP (MR43 and MR18) with no issues.
And yes. It is exceptionally strange. The fact that it happened to a new hardware device in the same logical "Home" slot is what makes this so weird.
As I said, I have plenty of other Chromecasts (5+ a Chromecast Audio) and have no other problems with any of those.

I also have 6 Nest Protects, a 2nd gen Nest thermostat, a Nest Hello doorbell and a handful of Google Home minis and a Google Home Hub.
Not to mention a ton of other endpoints here.
And nothing else has connectivity issues.

It really seems like something is asking the Chromecast the reboot, but I'm not aware of anything that would be able to do that.

Doesn't sound like a wider network issue since it is only the one device. Because it happens only on that one TV and with 2 different Chromecasts I would look at that closely. Seems like your router is close enough but still the device may not be getting a strong enough signal.  Could it be the TV? Try a different HDMI. Try using the TV's usb to power the Chromecast rather than the wall (I know! Opposite!).

If you swap out another Chromecast for the one in that same TV and it reboots you will at least isolate this to the tv or the signal to the tv being the issue.

Right.

Initially my thought was that this was a hardware issue with the first Chromecast used.
But since it followed to a new replacement device that obviously cannot be it.
Which is what let me to the illusive "something asking that device in Google Home to reboot".
I have a hard time seeing how it could be the TV since HDMI should be a one way protocol as long as CEC is turned off.
But I guess it is a possibility. It's more likely than so many other things.
I'll try swapping the power supply and cable out as well.
As for powering it from the TV that is not a stable solution. I established that a LONG time ago 🙂

I totally agree with the powering from the wall and often recommend that as the solution!

Still a mystery so keep trying to isolate the issue.

I don't know if this helps you but, i had for 1 year a problem with chromecast, the problem was related to two things
1. old android version bug
2. old router version firmware

one of those things solved defintly all the problems with chromecast, if you are using a router, and you are telling me that your two chromecast fails, then, if you have two chromecasts, the probabbility that the chromecast be the problem is low, as i see it

to me, your problem is in your main device, or router, you can try that
i tell you this due my experience, it means, chromecast never was the problem, was my alternative router firmware modded, and my device with an old android version, or mod android version.

if you want to try my solutions, that worked for me, try with another firmware in your router, or another wifi

Thanks, but neither is applicable.

I run the latest stable firmware on both access points and router.
And I run vanilla Android 12 on a Pixel 5.

Zordrack

Nope.
Replacing the power supply did not change anything at all.
So the only things remaining are logic or the TV.

I'll try a different HDMI port and disabling CEC on the TV.
If it still reboots after that then it has to be some sort of software/logic issue.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help, JillG.

@Zordrack, how's it going? Still need help with this?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Yeah I still haven't managed to resolve this.
To recap, so far I've replaced the Chromecast Ultra, replaced the power supply and cable, moved to different HDMI port on TV and verified that CEC is disabled on the TV.
Only device that has flakey connectivity on my network (out of ~80 client devices) is my refrigerator.

Chromecast is connected to Meraki MR 33 access point running Firmware 28.5 and shared with 8 other clients, non of which has displayed any issues.

I honestly don't know what else I can check

Hi Zordrack,

Thanks for the swift reply. Could you please try to plug the Chromecast Ultra to a different TV where your other working Chromecast is connected to so we can isolate the issue?

Regards,

Jennifer

Just checked the historical wireless data for the Chromecast.
Signal is at ~neg 68db with ~30db SNR.
Channel utilization is at ~12%.

Hey,

Tried a new TV and it's still rebooting.
Is there anything that could call on it to remote through API ?

I have the exact thing happening with my chromecast, usually at 3pm each day but the time does vary by an hour or two each day.  I have a much older chromecast in my bedroom that has no problems.  Rebooting unit is cast version 1.57.275994

Spinny

I believe this started with that firmware version release

abatstra

Exact same problem here. Chromecast restarts itself within an hour of 3pm every single day. Has been doing it for months now. Super frustrating and nobody seems to have any answers. I cast a website 24/7 and have been doing so for years. All of a sudden I have to redo it every single day.

My older chromecast has an older firmware version and has no issues

I am having the exact same issue with my Chromecast. I have ruled out the HDMI ports, TV, Power Adapter, and Wi-Fi signal. HELP!

Zordrack

It would be nice if someone with actual knowledge would get involved in this.
Obviously this is NOT an isolated unique incidence and the troubleshooting and solution lies in the Chromecast product stack and NOT in individual users TVs or home networks.

I agree completely!   This has gone on forever!

I agree. It seems like a "feature" introduced some times in a new firmware update, that it reboots every day around 3-4 PM.

But it only seems to happen when it's displaying a website (using dashcast), not when streaming videos from netflix/youtube etc.

I'm having the same issue around 3 PM each day.

I know next to nothing about technology but I am having the same issue as you and apparently many others. It was rebooting daily, sometimes it was near a consistent time, other times completely random, sometimes twice a day. And then out of nowhere it just stopped doing it. I actually didn't notice it had stopped until it rebooted itself on me today and just totally rejogged my memory about my prior annoyance with it and had to search this phenomenon which led me here!

I haven't read all the way to the end of the discussion thread so I don't know if it was ever resolved and if it was, I probably wouldn't fully grasp the concept or scope of the root issue or it's solution. Mine could be from a myriad of all the theories presented here because I simply don't know the whole range of possible interactions between hardware, network signals and device issues, etc. I've heard all the terminology before but everything I've  read so far is rather foreign to me, as I lack a full understanding of the interworkings and mechanisms behind basic technology. But I'm going to read on and see where this particular rabbit hole leads lol

Guess I'll have to check mine (I moved it into the bedroom tv and rarely use it).  The problem was tracked to an update but was never resolved by google....maybe they came out with a new version.

Hey everyone,

I apologize about the late response on this thread, your patience is appreciated! It looks like OP has exhausted all the troubleshooting we would provide, isolated the issue, and even replaced their Chromecast device. I talked with a higher tier of support, and they would like to investigate this issue further. If you are experiencing this issue, after your Chromecast reboots, please go into your Google Home app and submit feedback with logs enabled. Under the description, please put "CCT3 randomly rebooting" so that the engineering team can compile these reports together and look for a resolution.

I'm sorry we couldn't have been more help here, but if you have any other questions or concerns, please let us know.

Best regards,
Jeran

We use chromecasts with the Dashcast app to display a website on an outdoor info display at remote locations. It also reboots every day at 3-4PM - it shuts down gracefully with a "restarting..." screen or similar, and then comes back in 30 secs or less. It started happening during the fall of 2021, but it worked stable for several months before that.

Unfortunately I cannot discover the installed Chromecast in my Google Home app with my iPhone when it's on the remote VPN. Is there any chance that I can connect to it by IP address and retrieve the logs?

I have to do a hard reboot (unplug power for 5 seconds) to get my unit to show in google home after it's done a 3pm reboot but our works fine.  We use ours for casting tv only.....

abatstra

Just wanted to mention that I followed the instructions and submitted feedback with logs and the subject "CCT3 randomly rebooting" a while back, but received no feedback from Google. Also want to be clear, that it doesn't seem to be random. It is every single afternoon around 3-4pm for me. There are other issues similar to this one posted. We're going on well over a year now with no resolution. This is absurd.

Abatstra....welcome to the club!  Same here but it has changed for me over the last month, only does it once or twice a week.

yep, my chromecast in the bedroom reboots daily on or about 4pm/4am.....none of my others do this.

Yep... Same for me.  Started rebooting around 6:00 PM every day for the last half year or so.  Pain in the...

I am having the same issue. Chromecast Ultra restarts around 3pm daily. This is obviously a "feature". I missed the end of my show today because it decided to reboot at 5 minutes to the hour. Honestly, Google, if I wanted my device to force a reboot while I'm using it I'd buy a Microsoft product.

Spinny

Yeah, past time to get this fixed

Same issue here. Chromecast restarts everyday between 2-4pm. So frustrating, I thought it was my WiFi so rang up and growled my WiFi provider.

i also have this issue and it’s so frustrating for it to reboot in the middle of me watching something and completely clear out the playlist i had pending to play. doesn’t seem like they care to fix the issue which is surprising for it being a google product.
