Google Home can't find Chromecast

I have a first-gen Chromecast.  It has worked fine for years.  Just changed internet providers.  Now the Chromecast can't find the new wifi.  So I loaded the Google Home app to my iPad Pro (ML0T2LL/A) OS 14.8.  Unfortunately, my google home app can't find the device.  It's really odd because the iPad sees the Chromecast as a network in my wifi settings but the app doesn't recognize the Chromecast.  I've tried all of the following:

  • Reset my Chromecast to factory settings
  • Unplugged/plugged Chromecast in power
  • Unplugged/plugged Chromecast in my 4K Roku TV (purchased two years ago)
  • Moved my iPad within 1 foot of Chromecast
  • Rebooted iPad
  • Confirmed iPad is on Wifi/Bluetooth
  • Performed all recommended standard support steps

What should I do next to allow the Google Home app to see my Chromecast?  Is the Chromecast just too old?

Hi Jeran,

I fixed the issue by resetting resetting the Chromecast to factory default and following these steps:

Generation One (GEN1)

  • Factory Reset & Setup on a new network
    1. Hold button on side of Chromecast for 25 seconds until white light flashes
    2. Make sure iPhone is in Airplane mode.
    3. Privacy->Location Services->Google Home set to Always and Precise Location turned on.
    4. Connect to Chromecast network shown on TV screen.
    5. Start Google Home App
    6. Click OK when Google home pop-up message says you are not connected to the internet.

The big shocker was until I set Location services to Always and Precision Location for Google Home, Google Home could not find the Chromecast, even if I was connected to the Chromecast WiFi SSID.

FYI: I have and iPhone 7 running IOS 14.8

Some programmer should fix this !

Thanks for contacting me

I have the same problem. I switched networks and nothing works. I have tried everything that you have and nothing works. The old ChromeCast application for my iPhone use to work great. I could take my chromecast on vacation and connect it to multiple networks no problem. Then google discontinued the Chromecaste App and access to chromecast from my PC, now I have no way to use my chromecast.

Hey there gdawg20,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that connection issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • Do you have a dual-band router? (2.4GHz and 5GHz)
  • What version of Google Home are you running?
  • What color is the LED light on the Chromecast?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran
