LED on Chromecast Remote Blinks Once and Remote Doesn't Work

Hi all, 

The LED on my chromecast remote blinks once (quite quickly) when I put batteries in and then the remote doesn't work. 
I have tried resetting the remote and putting it into pairing mode but it's like the remote is bricked. 

Can anyone advise?
