Using an external ethernet adapter via usb hub with Chromecast 4

Jan_P

Hi,

I'd Like to connect my chromecast to my network via RJ45 cable to ensure minimum delay over my LAN for streaming services (such as steamlink). My Chromecast is currently hooked up to a unitek usb-c hub with 100W power delivery. The idea is to connect a USB gigabit ethernet adapter to the hub and then the chromecast should theoretically be able to connect to the network via this method.

The hub is plug and play, so all attached devices should work with no technical limitations, however, I worry that because google offers their own ethernet adapter for almost the same price as the chromecast itself. Has anyone had any luck with this kind of solution?

Your mileage is going to vary here as Google don't officially support the use of hubs via the USB-C port. That's not to say it won't work, as I'm sure you'll find users reporting success with a specific hub and ethernet adapter but I'd recommend doing some research first.

Thanks davidking. Research for a specific case like this is pretty niche, I've found all of one topic on the google forums here, externally, I'm still searching.

The dedicated Google ethernet adaptor works well and I've got a wifi bridge too because my router is far away from the chrome cast(with Google tv)

The Google Ethernet Adapter is out if the question for me 🙂 it's appalling to me that the adapter costs almost as much as the device itself and that its limited to 10/100Mbit speeds. I bit the bullet and I've purchased an usb Gigabit Ethernet adapter to test my theory, and the good news is the adapter works as intended, but it didn't solve my use case because of some oversight on my part 😉

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help here, davidking and Jch12.

Jan_P, while this set up may have worked right now, you may experience some issues with the use of USB hubs since this isn't officially supported. I'd suggest you send feedback about this using the Google Home app. Here's how

Thanks,

Jennifer
