cant setup Chromecast

hail and well met!

first I have no idea what gen my chromecast is, i just got it since i cant use crunchy on ps3 anymore. i have a nonsmart samsung tv and a google pixel phone. whenever I try to set it up it says it needs further set up and takes me to a google website...which just tells me i need to contact the manufacturer... led light solid white. set up shows on my tv. google home just keeps cycling me to that webpage. tried manually connecting to it in wifi and it lets me but then "no internet" and doesnt let me do anything. i was under the impression you didnt need a smart tv to use one of these just a pixel and an hdmi socket...

Hello acearohanda,

Thanks for reaching out. Let's sort this out.

How far is your Chromecast from the Wi-Fi router? Please try the steps listed below:

  1. Reinstall the Google Home app.
  2. Reboot your Chromecast, Wi-Fi router, and mobile phone.
  3. Try to use a different mobile phone.
  4. Manually connect to the Chromecast SSID. Here's how: Go to the phone settings > Open Wi-Fi and connect to the Chromecast SSID (Example: Chromecast1234, Living Room TV, Bedroom TV, etc.) > Go to the Google Home app and try to set it up again.
  5. Factory reset your Chromecast.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hello acearohanda,

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. Keep me posted once you receive the replacement device so we can ensure that everything is up and running in your end.

Best,

Jennifer

well i got the new one and like preemptively did all the reinstalling/restarting and thought it was gonna work bc things were going along...and then it spent 15 minutes on the "connecting to wifi" screen. i cancelled the connection and tried again and just got the "needs to be activated go to help center" screen... which thr help center actually provides zero help. restarted everything even factory reset the chromecast and just same go to help center screen. so i guess Google has decided that poor people who dont have smart tvs or the newest phones don't get to use chromecast.

disclaimer i didnt try a new phone bc i live alone and don't have a tablet or a second phone so.

Hi there,

Oh no! We'd like to take a deeper look into this — could you fill out this form and let us know once you're done?

Thanks,

Jennifer

i already did that with the previous one i purchased and after them telling me to try everything id already tried working with someone on the google twit it just came down to "send it to us and we'll send you w refurbished replacement" which 1. i bought it days ago and you're gonna replace it with a used one? and 2. ive returned and bought a new one and same thing so its clearly not an issue of the first Chromecast being faulty. its honestly v upsetting that these are touted to work with any tv with an hdmi plug in and a smart phone with wifi.

Hey acearohanda,

Thanks for the swift reply and I understand why you feel that way. Unfortunately, because of an interruption caused by Sonos, a small number of you using Pixel phones in the US may be unable to set up devices at this time. You can see this information here

If you have a friend or family member that will visit you who have a non-Android phone, you may ask them if you can borrow their phone to set up the Chromecast. You will only need to use another phone to complete the initial setup so that your Chromecast can receive the latest software update. Once it is set up, you may now use your Pixel phone to control and cast a video content to your Chromecast.

This is not the experience that we wanted you to have. We'll make sure to learn from this and take it as an opportunity to improve.

Thanks,

Jennifer

so i wasted hours talking to now three different people at google, even being told i need to send it to them so they can "fix it" just to be told no actually we **bleep**ed up and now anyone using a google pixel cant connect to other google smart products.

...and honestly the fact that the constant suggestion is "idk have someone with a different phone come do it for you or get a different phone" what a joke.
