Camera notifications split between apps

HBIII

Hi! I have cameras that were setup in the Nest app, and newer cameras we've added since they were required to be setup in the Home app.

The issue I'm having is that notifications for the older cameras only come via the Nest app, where the new cameras only push notifications to the Home app. All cameras are viewable from both apps, it's just the notifications.

I'd like to consolidate these so that all notifications come through the Home app. Is there a way to do this without disconnecting and reconnecting the cameras to my home?

Edit: Tried removing the doorbell to reconnect with the home app, turns out I can't do that. I have to set it up through the Nest app...this is silly

@HBIII

This is all deliberate on Google Nest's part. The Google Nest cameras and doorbells released starting in Sept. 2021 work ONLY in the Google Home app, while the older cameras and doorbells continue to work in the Google Nest app.

We've been using both apps ever since we got a new battery camera 18 months ago.

Which I'm fine with, it's the inability to set up the older ones with Home that is a bummer.

It's incredibly frustrating not being able to consolidate onto the Home app.  I'm more than happy to leave the Nest app behind, but for now, I can't get any notifications for the cameras that were set up via Nest on my Home app.  I get that Google wants to move to Home, so let us move to Home.

(Thanks for your reply, by the way)

Hi folks,

HBIII, I’m sorry to hear about your experience. Are you an iOS or Android user? Have you checked if the notifications settings in your Google Home app are on?

I appreciate your help, MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

JT

Notifications are on for both.. the cameras that were setup on Nest give me Nest notifications. The cameras setup on Home give me Home notifications.

I tried turning off nest notifications to see if it would force the earlier cameras to trigger Home alerts, no such luck.  When I do that, I only get notifications for the cameras setup on Home.

I'm currently getting notifications for all of my cameras, it's just that they're coming from different apps.  It's a small annoyance, but an annoyance that should be resolvable nonetheless.

@HBIII

That's how Google Nest has designed it to work! Cameras and doorbell installed in the Google Nest app send notifications through the Google Nest app. Cameras and doorbells installed in the Google Home app send notifications through the Google Home app. We've been getting notifications through two apps since we got a battery camera 19 months ago.

Is there any way. Any way at all. To get the devices that were set up on Nest app to show up from the Home app.

  • My wired doorbell cannot be setup on Home, I already tried removing it from nest and reinstalling via Home, it made me go back to setup on Nest.
  • My older cameras, which had to be setup on Nest, give me exclusively Nest notifications
  • My newer cameras, which were able to be setup on Home (required to, actually) give me exclusively Home notifications.
  • I don't want to have two apps for one thing, and the only thing anyone has done on this thread is re-explain my problem back to me.

Is there ANY WAY to get Home notifications for devices setup using the Nest app?

@HBIII

No.

Google Nest cameras and doorbells that are originally installed in the Google Nest app are administered in and get their notifications from the Google Nest app.

Google Nest cameras and doorbells that are originally installed in the Google Home app are administered in and get their notifications from the Google Home app.

That is Google Nest's chosen 2-app solution. Because we have 2 of the newer cameras, notifications for those come in the Google Home app, while notifications for our remaining cameras and doorbells come from the Google Nest app.

19 months ago, Google Nest's VP offered this explanation:

19 months later, we are still using 2 apps.
