Can't alter brightness on nest

The brightness slider does nothing at all. I have to get very close to the device to be able to read it. It used to respond to "screen on" spoken command but now this will only provide thorough details of the"Scream" horror films. Not only is this not really my genre, I feel I am now sufficiently informed about the subject given I am reminded nearly every day.
