Door Sensors For Google Home App

I have the Google Home App that auto senses when I come and go from the location and turns the camera on and off accordingly. This feature works well.

I want to add door sensors to my setup so when I leave, the system auto senses me leaving and turns the door sensors on. Then when I arrive, the system auto senses and turns off the door sensors and camera.

I tried purchasing a couple of different door sensors and could not get any of them to work with the Google Home App on my phone that controls my speakers, air conditioner and camera.

Does anyone know how to setup door sensors in the Google Home App and have them work with the location auto sensing?

Not sure if this is exactly what you are after, but I've used door/window sensors that use Tuya, but they did need to be linked through Home Assistant to get full automation routine control through the Google Nest integration and not Google Home directly, because they do not report as proper sensors under the Tuya app link.

The way I tackle it is any sensor open event, only triggers a notification when presence sensing is set to away mode, otherwise no notification. I still have audio announcements when the front/back door is opened while at home or away. Many sensor devices will often power save and not always be on, so turning them on/off isn't often viable, instead, using a condition you can prevent the action from triggering if not met. The other factor is WiFi sensors will have a delay due to the wake up time, connecting to the WiFi network and relaying through the cloud integration.

When I looked, the only door/window sensors I could find that didn't need any additional gateway/border router device were Tuya based ones. To get the most out of them, I have had to use Home Assistant to link them into Google Home as proper binary sensors through the Google Nest integration in Home Assistant. There's Zigbee sensors as well, but these I believe need additional hardware for the protocol communication.

Hope it helps.

I think I currently have over 10 different Aqara contact or door and window sensors that trigger everything from turning on or off lights to starting an xbox.

Its not hard to do

I believe Aqara can integrate with SmartThings. I use it for all connections to which i have numerous devices from wall switches (Kasa), light bulbs (sengled), door sensors(sengled), smart plugs Innr/sonoff), nest hubs/camera and Samsung appliances.
I can't complain at all. The integration with SmartThings to my Google home is easy. It's probably  overkill but my main tool is the home app. Also most of not all use zigbee protocol so that I don't clutter my wifi. In Google home, i use automations. Like turn on my light switch when the door opens. Some I used to turn off the lights if I'm exiting or closing the door. Some I text myself whenever exterior doors are open. All my standard bulbs are LED. Overtime I believe the cost savings have paid off for all this automation.

The automations and scheduling is great.

The basic principle of increasing security is to add independent, reliable  layers.  Having two sensors on one door with one disabling the other is problematic. How do those sensors know whether you are coming or going?  What starts them working?

Regardless, since Google Home can not yet respond to a change of state of a door sensor with a Routine, the simplest sensor to do door monitoring is a Tuya wi-fi PIR.  A GH Routine can use one as a trigger having a delay.   For $5 you can have simple 24x7 (less internet and power outages) door monitoring.    I have one at each of my entries that announces doorway activity all the time with one routine,  and also energizes an alarm -that has a manual disconnect.

I am looking to install a door sensor on the front door and have monitoring of the door openings only at night.

During the day their are house aids coming and going.   We need to know if our 89 yr old mother decides to go for a walk.  ?The monitoring has be able to reach out to up to 2 people with a phone call.

I will look into the Tuya door sensors and open to any advice . Thanks Jim
