Google Family Group children unable to use Nest smart display/speakers to control household devices

Issue:

  • Previously, all of my children in my Google Family Group were able to use the Google Assistant on our Nest smart displays and speakers to control lights and other devices that are connected to the home on the Google Home app.
  • Now (several months), whenever a child tries to use a Google Nest display or speaker to control lights, they get a response: "One or more devices are unavailable. You might try setting them up again in the Google Home app".

Troubleshooting:

  • I've gone through the Google Home app dozens of times and all the settings are correct.
    • Each child is added to smart display/speaker devices.
    • Each child has their voice matched.
      • I've tried re-training each child voice.
    • Personal results are on.

Workarounds:

  • I removed their voice recognition from certain smart displays so they are again able to control lights again.
    • Now they are unable to use other features (media, calling, etc).
  • They can use touch features of smart displays to control devices.

What I am missing, or what was Google thinking removing the ability for children in a Family Group to not be able to control devices?

Hi @Scott77,

I appreciate the thorough information you have provided in your post. I understand that when your children try to control the light, they receive an error message that says one or more devices are unavailable. You might try setting them up again in the Google Home app, and I appreciate the troubleshooting steps you've already taken. I'm here to help you find a solution together.

To assist you further, please attempt the following questions:

  • Is the Google Home app completely updated on all devices?
  • Does the smart light successfully set up on the same WiFi network?
  • If the lights are also set up in the device maker’s app, are they able to control the lights through that app?
  • Are any of the voice commands from Google Home working with the lights?
  • Have you recently made any adjustments to your WiFi network, Google Home, and/or light setup?
  • Have you ever been able to control the lights via your Google Home?
  • Have you recently factory reset your Google Home or your lights?
  • Have you attempted to disconnect and reconnect your lights on both apps?
  • Which model of Google Home do you have?
  • Do they receive a response when they ask the Google assistant to do something else, or do they only get an error message when they try to control the lights?
  • What is the lights' model?
  • Have you just reset the factory settings on any of your lighting or Google Home devices?
  • When they try to make a call and play some music, what error message appears?

Please keep me posted.

Warm regards,
