Help - white noise keeps suddenly stopping overnight

sam3K

For years I have been using my Nest Wifi point with the built-in Home speaker to play white noise overnight for my three-year-old. The command "hey google, play white noise" usually triggers the Relaxing Sounds white noise that loops hourly for 12 hours. Over the past few weeks it's been stopping at seemingly random times overnight, waking him up, and I can't figure out why. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there an automation/routine that will ensure it doesn't stop playing? We need sleep 😩

Hi sam3K,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you, and we apologize for the delay. We understand your concern and the importance of reliable white noise for your toddler's sleep.

You can do a sequential reboot of your entire network and see if that helps, or please perform a 2-minute power cycle on your entire network to re-establish the connection on your connected devices. Here's how:

  1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the child points.
  4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
  5. Connect the power cord to the modem then to your router and points.

Also, you can give these steps a try:

  • Update Software: Ensure both the Google Home app and the Nest Wifi firmware are updated to the latest versions.
  • Check Network Stability: Monitor your internet connection for potential dropouts or fluctuations.
  • Alternative White Noise Source: Consider using a dedicated white noise machine or an alternative audio device connected to your Nest Wifi point through Bluetooth or Chromecast.
  • Automation Routine: Create a custom routine in the Google Home app that triggers white noise playback hourly for 12 hours. This might provide more control and reliability.
  • Deactivate Inactive Timers: If the Relaxing Sounds option has a built-in timer, see if you can disable it or choose a different white noise source without automatic shutoff.

Hope this helps.

Dan

Same here and this wakes our 9-month old randomly too at night.

So annoying. Still broken as of today.

Hi febzz,

We're sorry to hear that you're still experiencing this kind of concern. Just so we are on the same page, have you tried the steps above? If so, how was it? What device are we working with?

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Dan

Yes all of the above options have been exhausted/tried but to no avail.

Best workaround for me: I had to create scheduled automation routines to start White Noise at different times between midnight and 6am in case the first White Noise started between 7 and 8pm prior night somehow stops playing overnight.

This was never an issue before and White Noise used to play for 12 hours straight, so if I started it at 7pm, it would end around 7am. No longer the case, as of around 3 weeks ago.

Hello there febzz,

Could you be specific with the device that you're using? Is it a Google Home speaker or a Nest Wifi point?

Thanks,

Dan
