How big is my home?

jmalmsten
Community Member

I am confused to say the least. I have pointed out where my home is to google. I only have one phone that I use for presence sensing. I have given googles apps permission to use my location for presence sensing. Everything and all have I done that I can think of. But even if I am a couple of kilometers away from my home with said phone, I am still registering as "home" according to google and the home and away routines refuse to automate. What am I doing wrong here? Or do Google consider the whole county as my home? Just how far away do I need to be before google accepts that I have left? Because 20-30 km is not deemed enough according to my testing.

Hi jmalmsten,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community and sorry for the late response.

This is not the experience that we wanted you to have, let me help you out. A few things: are you using an Android phone or iPhone? Are you using Home/away assist or Home/away routines? Check the helpful articles below to learn more about these features.

Change Home/Away Assist settings

Change Home & Away Routines settings

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Allright, let's go through this once more.

It's an android phone. That phone is the only one connected to my google account. It is the presence sensing I'm trying to get going in the home app. I do not have any nest routers or cameras so I do not have the nest app. I have set my home coordinates in the presence sensing. Presence sensing is set up as active. My phone is set up to be used for presence sensing. I have enabled all the location services I can think of. I have reinstalled the app several times. I have disabled and reenabled the presence sensing...

Oh, and the phone in question is a One+ 10 Pro in Sweden. It has Oxygen OS v13 installed.

The closest I have gotten this to work is that I enabled presence sensing for my google smart speakers and they can usually detect that the house is empty... After 2-3 hours. And sometimes the system detects that the phone has come home, but it never sees it leave the nebulous perimeter. And sometimes I am sitting at home reading and suddenly the smartlights go dark because I haven't talked to the assistant in a while... A bit passive aggressive, but ok...

The funny thing is that my iRobot vacuum detects my absence almost instantly. So... It should be possible for the google assistant as well, I guess.

I think that's about as exhaustive I can be at the moment.

Hello there jmalmsten,

Thanks for the details you provided. We’d be happy to look into this for you. Let’s try uninstalling and reinstalling Google Home app and make sure that Google assistant and Google app are updated then observe if the issue remains. You can also use another phone to further isolate your concern.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi there,

Chiming in to see if you still need assistance with this. Hope the previous post helped. Let us know if you have additional questions, otherwise we’ll be locking the thread.

Best,

Princess

I'm not sure if uninstalling it and reinstalling it once more will make a difference compared with the dosen or so other times I've tried it. I'll try it when I get home.

And No, I don't have access to another phone to try things out.

Hi jmalmsten,

How was it? Was it still the same after trying the steps?

Best,

Princess

Well. I uninstalled it through the play store. I reinstalled it. I went back in and re-did the approvals of location all the time and activated presence sensing again. And... Look in the history of the app at the end of each day and I see nada. Nothing. It even stopped using my home devices to detect my absence.

I have now resorted to adding a routine that shuts off my lights manually at a set time. As the presence sensing cannot be bothered with it.

Hi jmalmsten,

Thanks for trying the steps. After adding a routine, were you able to experience any issues? You might also want to check this link for additional info: https://goo.gle/3bgN95l

Yes, I have seen that list of troubleshooting steps.

Yes, I have followed the steps dozens of times. Latest being today, a few minutes ago.

No. Those steps do nothing. The issue very much persists.
