Matter Support for 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat

NKearns
Community Member

Where is Matter support for the more expensive 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat? Is there a time frame for when Matter support for the other Nest thermostats will be rolled out? It would be great for Google to communicate it's intentions. If they have no intentions of providing Matter support for 2nd and 3rd gen Nest Learning thermostats then it at least allows us, the consumers, to make some informed decisions. I look forward to your response.

Hi NKearns,

We're happy to hear about your excitement for Nest Learning Thermostat's integration with Matter, but we don't have any news to share about its availability timeframe. Our teams are aware, and we're working on a fix. Right now, only the Nest Thermostat 2020 is one of the Google Nest products that will support Matter, meaning that it will be possible for our customers to control their thermostat from third-party platforms that are Matter certified. Check out this article of Google devices with Matter to learn more.

If you have questions or concerns in the future, feel free to start a new thread, and we'll be happy to help.

All the best,

Zoe

Sadly you have provided no new information. I was already aware that only the basic Nest Thermostat supported Matter. I am somewhat disappointed that those of us that invested in the more expensive Nest Learning thermostat are being left behind. My question was WHEN will matter support be available for the 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat. Effectively you are saying I should have bought the cheaper version? Very sad.

Hi folks,

@NKearns, this is not the experience we want you to have, and I know this is not the answer you're looking for. While we don't have any timeframe to share, I'd suggest submitting feedback using the Google Home app. Our team is working hard to deliver the best experience to our users.

Share feedback about Google Nest.

Thanks for the help here, Zoe.

Cheers,

Renz

I am super disappointed.

I just replaced my old ecobee with nest thermostat 3rd gen - main reason was matter / thread support I expected.
I assumed that "2020 model" means the latest....and after days of searching found that it is the old model...
I know that google de-prioritized smart home development but still ....
I will return my nest and get latest ecobee - I see so many cool and better features.

This is another reminder for me to steer clear of any Google smart home devices.   Google has shown again and again that they are not committed to supporting their own products, and will either let them languish with no updates, or stop supporting them all together.

Go to hell google. I hope some starts a class action against you for deceptive business practices.

Do you have "any timeframe to share" yet, RenzJ?

You are happy to hear about their excitement? Obviously, you're taking the piss. Nobody is excited here because this is the service you don't provide us. The word you're looking for is “disappointment” 😂

We would appreciate if you could take it seriously. Standard template responses not resulting in actions to address the problem just won’t do anymore. Just either say you are going to do something about it in specific timeframe or have guts to admit that it isn’t happening. It will save people time a money and you could get our respect for not sending misleading messages.

Which (Nest) temperature sensors should I use with Nest Thermostat that supports Matter?

Nest Thermostat (4th gen) doesn’t work with Nest temperature sensors.

it feel like I need to chose between Matter and additional sensors.

Any update on Nest learning thermostat get matter support.

Yeah it is kind of crazy that the more expensive model still doesn't have Matter support. Especially when they're selling it alongside the cheaper model. Also, hoping for an update soon - since I have two 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostats that were bought in 2021.

It's really depressing to see the responses from Google on the Nest forum(s)

*sensible question from someone who clearly knows what they are doing*

All answers go one of two ways

1) Have you tried a different phone?

2) We don't have any information to share right now, thanks for your interest

Clearly Google can't do hardware at all, and anyone who expected them  to learn and give real support (including me) is mistaken.

Don't forget response option 3, which was used above:  "I'd suggest submitting feedback using the Google Home app. Our team is working hard to deliver the best experience to our users."

I'm not holding my breath.

I’m seriously contemplating moving away from the Google/nest ecosystem completely because of this. I already tossed my OG Google home device off my balcony earlier today. Literally

This is very disappointing… user of a 3rd gen spend the extra money to make sure I have the latest and now to learn that i should have spend less to get a nest with better functions 😞

Such a bad experience

Exactly, and par for the course with Google and their attempts at consumer hardware products.  It does not make sense to trust or invest in their products when they do things like this.

It is very disappointing indeed that the most expensive piece of hardware is not getting Matter support anytime soon.

Guess it's time to sell these useless devices.

Google should stop selling their useless devices if they don't plan to support them. I will never buy another Google device.

Another person here who is hugely disappointed that there is no matter support for the 3rd gen learning thermostat. It really is a shambles.

Will be looking to replace my two and the two Protect's next year and will likely never buy any more Google hardware due to the lack of support provided for these otherwise great devices.

Same, I'm done with them.  Now my Google Mesh Router is randomly going offline every day or two.  I googled (no pun intended) and apparently this is a well known issue going back to 2021.   There were suggestions of a firmware update, but it never came and the issue persists.  The best part was when I contacted Google Support and their focus was making sure the router is plugged in (!!!!).... making sure I have an ethernet cable connecting it to my modem... and finally "Let's unplug it and plug it back in."

It's another case where there is a well known issue, but Google would rather treat us like idiots than support their own products.

The question that I have is why you cannot Share a timeline!!!

every project should have a release date. If you are working on it it means that there is a project for G3 to support Matters!

please respect to your customers and at least share an approximate release date.

Exactly.  "We're working on it" or "We'll pass your feedback to the team" with no specifics means they are absolutely not working on this.

GregZ

Let me translate: we are working on it => we heard about it but we don’t know what to do, lets see and wait until hardware become obsolete and problem solved.

We'll pass your feedback to the team => we will forward your email to ‘no replay account ‘ we have already rule in our email system to delete emails from no replay email accounts so we won’t notice it . Problem solved 🙂

Simply because there is no timeline.

I wish Nest was never acquired by Google. Nest support was already questionable but Google support is simple nonexistent!

GregZ

After unsuccessfully trying to get some reasonable answers from google support for 2 months I can only conclude that google doesn’t give a flaying f….k about customers who paid premium buck for thermostats. Tough Luck gogle already have our many and won’t lift a finger to resolve it.

To add my voice to this...

I agree with everyone else here.  To upgrade the cheaper model with matter compatibility and NOT the more expensive learning thermostat is hard to understand.

But Google dont seem to want us to understand.  Im sure there must be some kind of technical reason why they cant achieve this (whatever that may be) but please just come out and say that its not coming.

I NEED matter compatibility with my thermostat.  I decided to give Google until the end of 2023 to update the firmware or just announce they weren't going to do it.  Either way the nest thermostat gets replaced in January... I gave them more than enough time to be open with us.

How did your migration go.  I’m planning on getting a smart thermostat installed.   I assume no news from Google yet.

It was very easy. Sadly no update from Google and I honestly think Google will not update the Nest. I moved to Hive and it working a charm.

NKearns

I am now moving to Hive. I am done with Google. I feel I am being screwed over with every product I buy. I have a google centric smart home with Nest smoke alarms. Hubs, etc... but I will be replacing them one by one for devices that support matter and are more user-friendly. The sheer number of apps that you need with google to controll devices always iritated me so I am sure moving away from their products can only be a good thing.

Came here to post this too - I would also like to see matter support for the thermostat.  Submitting a chat request to talk to an entry level person in a callcenter seems like a poor way to gate feature requests.  I hope your product managers are seeing this.  If you make it too difficult for customers to give you feedback, they won't be your customers for long.

Google/Nest team. You need to do better. This thread is one of the top Google search results for Nest Matter Support.

I just bought a 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat because there was a flurry of articles in 2023 saying the thermostat finally supports Matter. I should have paid more attention that it was only added for the cheaper version of the thermostat.

Could you please provide some confirmation that Matter support will be coming to this model within the next business week? Otherwise this product is getting returned.

Good luck with this. Google treat their hardware like their software products; spin it up, play, drop after a few years.

They don't realise that hardware come with  consumer regulations, and hardware vendors - especially for "non-techie" products like home thermostats, have to make good on their promises and keep supporting things.

Came here to be disappointed as many others.

Google really knows how to drive their products into ground. It is so much difficult to integrate Nest with other products like TRVs directly or via Home Assistant due to this restrictive nature.

Would really like to see it being implemented for 3rd gen Nest but given the time this request has been open it does not seem likely.

I think it's time that a company starts building some hardware based on common tooling that is open source - Allow people the option to contribute. Make pretty hardware and make it easy to use for normies, (including a cloud service) but easy to customize for tech minded people.

I am afraid that Google somehow would manage to screw it to:)
