Nest Hub2 using its own Thread network

fabnapp
Community Member

I now use my Best Nub2 to control a couple of Matter enabled Thread devices (Eve Power, Eve Door& Window). These are also controlled with Thread+Matter by Apple home and an AppleTV4K as border router.

I see the two border routers created separate Thread networks. So obviously Nest Hub2 does not yet use Thread 1.3.0 which would allow merging them. Is this correct? What are Googles plans to fix that?

I found the thread version using iOS/Mac app called Discovery DNS-SD Browser. Go to "_meshcop._udp.". Pick your Thread Router. "tv" means thread version. It’s probably possible using a similar app with an android but I don’t have one. I don’t know about its mesh capabilities. Technically it’s possible but I don’t see any other thread router with Thread 1.3.0.

Hi @fabnapp

Great question.
I am not able to find out which Thread version is running on the Nest Hub 2e gen.

Sorry I am not much of a help but I also would like to know the answer. 😂
Also there is no public release notes for the firmware for each device.

@fabnapp @RXShorty  what is a thread network?

@fabnapp @RXShorty  nevermind community I see that it's already explained. I hope it all works out for you all. good to meet you all. it's good to be apart of the community. take care out there, and best of luck with your smart home.

Anybody from Google able to add some insight?

what are you trying to achieve actually? it would help me understand what your goal is, and also it may actually help me in the future when installing my own equipment.

Brandon LaMont Cooper

Thread since it‘s newest Version 1.3.0 supports multiple Border Routers joining and controlling the same network. My ultimate target scenario is Google Nest Hub 2, Amazon Echo4 and Apple TV4k all in the same Thread network controlling all the iOT devices and forming a super stable redundant mesh network.

so what's the problem? just connect them all together through wifi and or blutooth, and if that don't work, replace the device that has malfunctioned, and start over. good luck community

Why would I want inferior iot tech like WiFi and BT when I am asking about Thread 🙂

So simple terms again: when will Nest devices get the current Thread 1.3.0?

yeah I see now! thanks! I had to do a little research to learn about the thread network, hardware and its functions. I see that It could take a while to learn all that's needed to be learned, but it seems very interesting. sorry I was unable to assist with specifics. I hope all is well for you in the future and I hope all the equipment works well in the future as well. thanks for the interesting dynamic that contributed to my wisdom development. I never knew about thread devices, or thread home networks. very good work everyone. But I guess it's gonna be good in the future when I begin to build my dream house. It's gonna be a smart home, wonderful how well everything works out. thank you

Hi @fabnapp

Probably when a half year or a few new stable releases are present.

To implement such tech within devices that have a lot of users  needs some good testing. So I am sure they won't be on the latest release every time. Maybe Google waits for 2.0?

For something that actually is the very technology that makes matter make sense, that would be super lame.

See here what it actually is

I look forward to the development of my own network with my dream home. It's good to develop and stay in the know. thanks for the dynamics and unity this holiday season. take care, see ya.

Nest hub (2nd Gen) is using Thread 1.3.0

fabnapp

How do you know?

Can it cooperate with other border routers then?

Awesome. That app also shows all matter devices! (In a cryptic manner though) it also shows that actually Apple is the culprit here beeing on 1.2.0 still 🙂

What I cant find here are my other thread devices (All Eve). Tips welcome o/

From my understanding meshcop only shows thread border routers. What matter devices do you have?

fabnapp

i got

2 pairs of Eve Energy that are thread/Matter

2 pairs of Eve Window that are thread/Matter

several Eve Thermostats that Are Thread but not Matter yet

2 Hue Bridges that are Matter

Several Amazon Echos that are Matter (but no thread)

Apple TV 4K which is a Matter Controller and Thread 1.2.0 Boarder Router for all the Eve devices

Nest Hub 1 (Matter but no thread)

Nest Hub 2 (Matter and thread boarder router for the Eves with matter so far. No luck with the Hue)

Wow! Nice setup! And the only things that appear are the thread border routers (Apple TV, Nest Hub 2nd) or do you see more under meshcop?

Let’s hope Apple will update to Thread 1.3.0 for a shared network with Google and Amazon (eero and Alexa)

Yea, so far I see those two as the Echo4 thread is not on yet (spring they state). The only way to kinda show my other thread devices I found so far is the Eve app - which does not list the Nest2 yet. I hope we get more graphic apps soon to visualize Matter and Thread setups

Do you know if it's possible to update Eve sensors to matter without a home hub with thread?

I want to update them using bluetooth from HomeKit and then use them with matter through Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen, Thread)

Only know you need Homekit. But I don't know if an iPad will be enough. I did it in a system with Apple TV thread. You upgrade the firmware through the Eve app and then it generates Matter QR codes which you can use e.g. with Google home.

Hey everyone,

It's good to see you all active in this Community.

While we learn new things every day, here are some insights about how Google products use Thread:

Google products are designed to work together so they can communicate with you and each other in a variety of ways. They typically use Wi-Fi networks, but can also use Thread wireless mesh networking.

  • In a Thread mesh network, Thread devices relay information to each other through Thread routers.
  • Homes can have one or more Thread routers so if one of them goes offline, your Thread devices can find another Thread router and continue communicating with each other.
  • Special Thread routers called Thread Border Routers enable devices to communicate between a Thread network and Wi-Fi network.

Thread mesh network advantages

  • Improved range: The Thread protocol and its radios are designed for extended range in the home. As you add more Thread routers, your Thread devices at the far ends of your home can communicate across the mesh network. This is especially helpful in larger homes, or homes where construction restricts the wireless signal range.
  • Low power: Thread requires very little power, so even battery-powered device can connect to your network and other products while staying charged for years.
  • Independent from Wi-Fi: Thread doesn't depend on your Wi-Fi router or network. If your router loses power or its internet connection, Thread-compatible products can still communicate with each other and you.
  • Works with Matter: Thread is compatible with Matter, a smart home industry standard that lets many smart home devices seamlessly work together. So if you have Matter-enabled products from Google and other companies, they can all communicate over a Thread network.

For an illustration of how Thread and Matter devices connect to each other in your home, go to the Thread Group's smart home page.

How Google products use Thread

Google products can use Thread and Wi-Fi for various purposes, like downloading software updates, sending app notifications, and devices communicating with each other. Products usually use Wi-Fi or Thread as their primary network to communicate with other devices. Some of our products have radios for both networks and can act as Thread border routers.

Google's Thread border routers are:

  • Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E)
  • Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max

Feel free to add new info as we discover these new things.

Best,

Princess
