Routine to play radio plays Spotify instead

christicles

Recently we've had an issue where instead of playing the radio station set in the play radio step it will play an album/single from Spotify with a similar name. It's not every time, but it's happened at least 3 times in the last week.

The routine is set to play radio with "BBC Radio 2" set as the text command, however it will sometimes now start paying and album on Spotify called "Live from BBC Radio 2" by First Aid.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out and letting us know about your routine concern. We'll work together to identify the cause of the problem and find a solution. A few questions: what Nest speaker or display do you own? Were there any recent changes made? Also, what troubleshooting steps have you taken so far?

Try to refresh your devices and observe if it makes a difference. First, reboot your Wi-Fi router, and once the network is back up, do the same thing to your Google Nest speaker.

Regards,

Juni

Hi Juni,

I am having this exact same problem (even playing the same song!!)

I am using a Google Home Mini, Firmware version 384934

Restarting doesn't do anything.

Hopefully a reply to me will help the other people in this thread!

Hi JamieColclough,

Thanks for posting. You can delete the routine and create a similar one then observe if it makes a difference.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Juni

Hi Juni,

I just did this and the same problem happened, so changing the routine doesn't fix anything.

Please suggest next steps.

Thanks,

Jamie

We also have exact same issue with multiple routines. They play Spotify everytime instead of BBC Radio 1.

did anyone ever find a solution (that didnt involve buying an alexa)

I set custom command instead of play radio and wrote “play radio 4”. Has been working perfectly since

thanks just tried it and it works

you are an absolute star!  WHY it doesn't work as media only Google knows but your suggestion worked perfectly.  Thank you!

Me too. It's infuriating.

One speaker only.

To others don't need a routine to play radio 4. One Nest is playing a band called 'radio 4''s album on Spotify.

I've tried a routine with radio outcome and free word outcome.

E.g. play BBC radio 4 on the BBC

Play BBC radio 4 on the BBC sounds app

Play BBC radio 4 live.

But it will only open the BBC sounds app, and /or continue playing the last podcast I had open.

And almost like it's seasonal, it started doing it again this morning. Instead of streaming BBC Radio 2, my routine started playing "Live From BBC Radio 2" by the Artist First Aid Kit. Same routine that has been working for months playing BBC Radio 2  just randomly started playing Spotify instead, even though the Play Radio Command is the only thing being used.

Screenshots of the routine from this morning

Bizarrely we have a very similar routine, playing BBC Radio 2, and it is working (currently!). The only difference is we do not use the radio function.  We just have it set up as an additional action and then in the action put 'PLAY BBC RADIO 2'.  Might be worth a go

Had the same issue where a R1 alarm would randomly turn into a Spotify playlist. Fix for me was to switch default music service to no default from Spotify. Seems my son playing music from his phone via Spotify may have changed this during the day. Only seems to happen when Spotify is selected as default. Can still select Spotify as I don’t remove the link just switch. Google home/settings/music.

Just come on to find a solution for this for exactly the same reason with BBC Radio 2 - mine ends up playing some strange German band on Spotify instead. Some mornings it works fine others it does the random playlist.
