Speaker Groups and Home App Issues

MrJinx
Community Member

I have several issues with casting audio to Speaker Groups

1. Speaker groups are not available or missing from the Favorites screen in the Home app and in the YouTube Music 'Cast To Audio' list
2. When a speaker group is selected in the Home app, only one speaker in a stereo pair plays. I've powered down the silent speaker. Sometimes that fixes the issue. Sometimes it does not.

3. In the Home app, in the Favorites screen, adding speakers or a stereo pair in the 'Cast' screen causes speakers playing to drop and disconnect. How many speakers can play at one time?

4. In the Home app, while a song is playing, in the Favorites screen, the now playing button is not available.

Hi MrJinx,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

We're sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Nest speakers. Before we start trying some steps, could you please list down all your Google Nest speakers that are connected to your Wi-Fi network? Also, what is the distance between each speakers from each other and from the router? Lastly, could you please provide a screenshot of the exact display you're getting from the Home app?

Looking forward to your response.

Princess

Hi MrJinx,

We're sorry about this. Let's work on this hand in hand.

1. Speaker groups are not available or missing from the Favorites screen in the Home app and in the YouTube Music 'Cast To Audio' list - Our team is already working on improvements regarding Public Preview. As our app keeps on improving, rest assured that this will be fixed for the next updates.

2. When a speaker group is selected in the Home app, only one speaker in a stereo pair plays. I've powered down the silent speaker. Sometimes that fixes the issue. Sometimes it does not. - Let's make sure that all the speakers are connected in the same Wi-Fi frequency (2.4 or 5 GHz). Also, as a workaround, let's try moving the speakers closer to each other to see if there would be any changes on its behavior.

3. In the Home app, in the Favorites screen, adding speakers or a stereo pair in the 'Cast' screen causes speakers playing to drop and disconnect. How many speakers can play at one time? - There are no specific number to how many can be included in a speaker group as long as the devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and within a good range from each other.

4. In the Home app, while a song is playing, in the Favorites screen, the now playing button is not available. - Does it also show the same after restarting the Home app? Have you already tried rebooting your phone?

Looking forward to your response.

Princess

here's what i discovered. i used the google wifi devices with my speakers. i had too many for the google wifi devices. after i switched to google nest pro, a lot of the connectivity problems went away. there are still a few but not as many.

thus, there is a speaker limit depending on the wifi device. my advice to your team is to ask how many speakers and what kind of wifi device is being used. a standard wifi or router is not enough to handle more than four speakers esp as a stereo pair.

Hi MrJinx,

Thanks for the additional info.

Could you please list down how many Google Nest speakers as well as Google Wifi/Nest pro devices are set up on your end? We'd like to further check what's causing this to happen.

Looking forward to your response.

good morning,

speaker groups still not working properly.

i discovered there's a limit to the number of speakers that can connect per Home stream.

also, there are several problems with the Home UI including creating stereo pairs.

Hi MrJinx,

We're sorry for the late response. I appreciate all the details you've shared and would like to get some info. What's the make and model of your phone where the Home app is installed? What's its Android or iOS version?

Lastly, can you please provide the cast firmware version of your Google Nest speakers?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings and then Device information.
  4. Under "Technical information," check for Cast firmware: "X.XXX.XXXXX." If the device is on Fuchsia, check for System firmware version: "X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX"

Looking forward to your response.

Hi MrJinx,

We apologize for the inconvenience your having with your Nest devices and its function on the speaker group. Checking in to see if you're still having issues with your speaker group?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

If the issue persists, kindly fill out the form provided above to get you to a higher tier of support, specifically for this thread.

Thanks,

Dan
