Nest Cams Randomly Not Identifying People

Annon
Community Member

Since Android's recent update on March 17, several cameras are randomly not identifying people activity. Seems to happen every time there is significant OS update, until Nest tweaks on their end.  Randomly, no activity shows when a large vehicle appears in drive or person walks in front of camera.  At times, it will catch going, but not coming by, and vice versa.  Happening on Outdoor and indoor cams--both wired.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling app.  This seems to occur often, especially after Android OS updates.  Cameras haven't changed positions and were working properly before update.

It will detect a leaf blowing on the carport, a bird flying by but not the FedEx delivery person carrying a big box!

Hi there,

I believe that Activity Zones will help you out in this situation. You can learn more about them here. I hope you find the article helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Activity zones are set.  Cam not identifying, sporadically, especially the FedEx truck in drive and driver who walks past cam twice to/from door.  Indoor cam having similar issues seeing movement in room.  All cams have activity zones set.

Hello everyone,

@Annon, it's us again. How's it going with your Nest Camera? To confirm, have you tried restarting your Nest Cameras? Try turning off and on your notifications settings, along with the categories that would detect the motion or activity. You may also try removing and re-adding your activity zones. Let us know how it goes.

I appreciate the help, Brad.

Best,

Emerson

Restarted router, and thus all cams.  Have turned notifications on and off.  I have now removed and reset zones, although I don't expect a change as it has never helped previously.

Nope, and it said I lost all my history when I reset zones.

Hi everyone,

@Annon, thanks for getting back to us. To confirm, do you have a Nest Aware subscription? Nest Aware is a paid subscription service you can use with your Nest products to help keep you informed about important events at your home. Standard features and upgraded Nest Aware features are different depending on which camera, speaker or display you have and which region your home is in. Also, removing your activity zones should not delete your event history. Looking forward to your response.

I appreciate the help, JT.

Yes, I have Nest Aware subscription on all cams.  It indicated I was losing my history when I deleted zones and redid them.  I also have a new issue, after the most recent android update on 4/14.

Push notifications are sporadically being delayed for up to 2 hrs since Android's system update on 4/14.

Hello Annon,

We appreciate you getting back to us. To confirm, what are the troubleshooting steps you have done so far? How far is your Nest Camera from your Wifi router? Try restarting your Wifi router and Nest Camera. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,
Emerson

Hi Annon,

Just one final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, we would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let us know.

Regards,
Emerson

I've tried everything you've recommended, and then some.  It happens sporadically.  It'll pick up a leaf blowing on carport floor but not the UPS delivery person with a big package in her hands, which is closer to the cam than the leaf or stray cat scurrying across the area.

I meant FedEx person.  Sometimes happens with UPS, too.

Hello Annon,

We appreciate your update. We would recommend you to reset it to the factory default and re-add it to your app. Also, reinstall your Nest app or Google Home app. Let us know how it goes.
