I installed Nest when it was first available, and it worked great.  Recently I installed 3 new Nest alarm systems. One of them started beeping once every minute indicating battery problems. It was under warranty then, I talked to Nest Support, and they won't change the battery, I have to buy the battery. 2nd installation just started doing the same, indicating battery problems. I paid almost 300 dollars for the 3 nests. I AM DONE WITH NESTS. THESE NEW NESTS ARE EXPENSIVE AND NOT RELIABLE AT ALL. I AM REMOVING THEM AND INSTALLING FIRST ALERT SYSTEMS.

NEVER BUYING NESTS AGAIN. UNFORTUNATELY, SUPPORT IS NOT GREAT.

1) I do not recall the light's status, but it was beeping every one minutes within 7 days after installation.. The first one S/N 06AA01AC0522003M. I spoke to the support center,
they will not replace the battery though it was under warranty,
2) The 2nd and 3rd installations were beeping similarly, indicating battery problem after 7 months. The S/Ns are, 06AA01C022209CJ and 06AA01C022202Z5.
I was very frustrated with all 3 Nest alarms, with long life battery problems and a very unhappy customer and your unwillingness to change the battery. Though it has a 2- year limited warranty.
I was out of alarm for a couple days or more. I went to two local hardware stores and one of them had 2- 4 Packs Ultimate Lithium Energizer AA and bought them at a cost of 38 dollars. I ordered another 12 packs from Amazon at a cost of approx 36 dollars. 
It is very frustrating when you pay close to 300 dollars for 3 Nest alarms and spend another 78 dollars for batteries within the warranty period.
