Unable to add second Nest Protect.

The same issue as described earlier by another user, yet the definitive solution hasn't been disclosed. I repeat.

I've had two Nest Protects working without any problems for about 8 years. I've changed wi-fi routers numerous times during that period and, until now, have managed to move both devices to the new wi-fi networks by removing and re-adding the devices to my account. The other day I changed wi-fi router again, removed and reset the devices as usual, and now I can only add ONE of the devices to my account. When I try to add the second device, the app fails to connect to the first device with a variety of error codes (so far I've seen P013, P024, P030). I've tried dozens of times now, with everything I can think of and have read about: mobile data off, all Nest Protects awake, completely deleted and recreated the 'home', 5GHz signal disabled, phone connected to same network as assisting device, manual connection to the assisting device's temporary wi-fi network... no luck. It always fails to connect to the assisting device. It doesn't matter which of the devices I add first - the first one is fine, and it always fails to connect to the assisting device when adding the second one.

Hiya!

I'm so sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues. I hope I can help!

With regards of connecting the devices...I don't think the nest protect supports the 5Ghz band network. I highly recommend try creating a separate network using the 2Ghz band. Another issue is possibly the router is blocking/not allowing the device to connect. Some other issues are:

  1. Connection range between each nest protect. From my knowledge any nest/google home devices connect simultaneously on its own little mesh network for better communication between all smart devices
  2. Interference between signals bands in your area
  3. Signal coverage (is the signal strong?)
  4. Bandwith

Those are some issues I could identify; I could be wrong. But here are some potential fixes you could try.:

  • Try connecting your nest protect to the 2.4ghz network.
  • Try factory resetting the device and set it up again
  • Set the nest protect up in an area with strong signal coverage then install it where it needs to go upon successful set up

I hope this helps 🙂

Hi folks,

@Huib, uh-oh! I'm sorry to hear that you can't add your second Nest Protect. Follow these:

  1. Quit and restart the Nest app or Google Home app.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is on. Turn Bluetooth off, then back on to refresh the connection.
  3. Restart the phone or tablet.
  4. Make sure the assisting device is awake and within pairing distance (maximum of 2 to 3 meters).
  5. Restart the assisting product.
  6. Move the joining device and mobile device or tablet closer to the router or the router closer to the assisting product.
  7. Put the mobile device or tablet on Airplane mode, then turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
  8. Try a different mobile device or tablet.
  9. Restart the network equipment (router, extender, or modem).
  10. Reset the joining device to defaults.
  11. Try to manually enter the entry key instead of scanning.
  12. Test with a mobile hotspot.
  13. Create a new home structure and try to pair the problematic Nest device.
    • If the Nest device pairs, the customer can use the new home and delete the old one. Ask them to reset any devices in the old home, then add them to the new home.
    • If the customer wants to keep the old home, have them remove all devices from the home > reset the account connection > connect all devices using the same network (Settings > Network), then pair the Nest devices in the app.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your help, @code_

Best,

Zoe

I can honestly say I’m having the same issue and it seems like a lot of people are. These protects should not give this much of an issue considering their cost.  Why on earth don’t they just allow you to connect them individually is beyond me. Mine will not connect  the hello for set up. I’ve shut off 5ghz and running just 2.4. I will try unplugging the hello. The next step will be returning then

I'm unsure why they aren't able to connect individually, again I'm no expert to why this is happening and what is causing the problem. All nest protects should communicate with each other by default. I do believe this a mandatory regulation in some country like most fire alarm systems in industrial and commercial settings have to communicate with each other. Nest protect has a wireless link(s) which should be working by connecting a new device it works in sync and talks to devices that are linked.

How did unplugging the hello go?

It seems that Google needs to update the firmware of the Nest Protects. This has never been a problem with older routers, as the second Nest Protect easily connected before. This is something with the latest line of new routers. It might have something to do with Wifi 6 and 7 or better security protocols.

Suggestions to fall back on older protocols or settings to make it work are, of course, not a good idea.
