2nd Gen Tstat non-responsive, but the app works

Hey Nest Community…my 2nd gen has been installed and flawless for several years.  I wanted to turn the heat up, and it is completely unresponsive.
I can control the heat via the app.
Battery voltage about 3.9, reading from the app.
If I remove it from base and re-install, the green light blinks once.
Its got me scratching my head.

FiHello JesseSamson,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. Let's see what's going on and why your thermostat stopped controlling your heat.

To isolate:

  • Are you getting any wiring reports or message codes?
  • When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter?
    • A clogged air filter can cause an HVAC system to not activate.
  • Could you also check its other power readouts in the Technical Info settings? (Voc, Vin, and Lin)
  • Please share with us a photo of your thermostat's wiring.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

Hey there,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi, and thanks for reaching out.  The t-stat works via the app, heater works as expected.  The problem is the the device itself is unresponsive to physical adjustments.  Turn the ring on the T-stat, nothing happens.  Thx.

Hi JesseSamson,

It's good to hear your heater works fine when controlled via the app. Could you please give these steps a whirl on your actual thermostat?

  1. Remove the thermostat display from its base.
  2. Ensure that all wires are tucked in and the display is properly seated at its base.
  3. Press and hold the thermostat screen for 10 seconds until it shuts down to restart.
  4. Reseat all the wires. (optional)

Let me know if there are changes.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

The wires look good, seated well.  From the app I can read the voltage, it is 3.95, so the battery seems good.

The t-stat will shut down and restart if held down for 10 seconds.

When it restarts, the outer ring is still non-responsive.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Thanks for letting me know. Unfortunately, we no longer manufacture a 2nd generation of the Nest Learning Thermostat, and I'm afraid to say that a replacement won't be an option. But you can still control your home's temperature over the Nest app. Also, you may visit the Google Store to see if there are on-going promotions for a newer Nest Thermostat in your country.

Let me know if you have more questions in mind, as I'll be locking this thread in 24 hours.

Regards,

Mark
