2nd Generstaion Thermostat

We have a Valiant boiler installed for 10 years, for the first 8 years we had an app based tool to control heating and hot water which never gave us any issues.  Since we have had the Google Thermostat installed we find that the heating and hot water  RANDOMLY  start up.  Not so bad when we at home, but expensive when we are away. Today the heating came on , outside temp is 27C  (UK) so we were hot inside.

Has anyone else encountered this issue with the Google Thermostat?

We had the Gas Boiler man in today and he RESET the link between the BASE and the Thermostat,  two hours later the boiler started up and i noticed on the thermostat the question "Do you want to cancel manual Heating", first time I have seen this.

Not sure what to do here , any suggestions would be welcomed.

Hi, @KeithLouden,

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community. I know that it is frustrating to experience unexpected heating and hot water issues, especially when it leads to increased energy costs. We understand that having reliable temperature control is crucial for comfort and efficiency. I’m happy to help you and find a solution.

To better assist you, please provide the following information:

  • When was your thermostat installed?
  • What is the status of the Heat Link's LED light?
  • When did the issue start?
  • Has there been any recent work done on your thermostat(s) or heating system?
  • Were there any power outages?
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?
  • Is there a pattern to the heat activating? Does it happen every day, or at the same time each day?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Disable the Bacteria Prevention feature:
    • On the display, go to Settings, then Equipment, then Bacteria Prevention, and then Disable.
  • Disable heating schedule:
    • On the thermostat, go to Settings > Reset > Auto-Schedule > Reset.
  • Disable Eco mode:
    • Press your thermostat ring to open the Quick View menu.
    • Select Settings > Eco.
    • Select the temperature you want. If your thermostat controls heating, you'll see 'Heat to'. If it controls cooling, you'll also see 'Cool to'.
    • Press the thermostat ring to select the temperature you want to change. Turn the ring to adjust until you see off.
  • If the Heat Link is in Manual mode, turn off Manual mode.
    • Press the Heat Link button once for one second.
    • If the Heat Link is not in Manual mode, or if the issue persists, go to the next step.
  • Perform a click test:
    • Activate the hot water using the display.
    • If the display shows the water droplet and you notice that the Heat Link also turns on, it means the system works as expected. If not, please let me know.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Hello Ana,   wow what a response, so much to consider and look at.  I will go through your response and try each of the suggestions.

I may have found the issue, and will watch the system over the next week or so .  When I looked at the settings in the APP, I had the hot water scheduled for each morning, but the Heating MODE (bottom left icon ) was set to "Off".  The Gas engineer (Not a Google expert)  we called in, checked the motorised valves which responded as they should when we switched on and off the heating and hot water in many combinations of settings.

I have now switched the MODE Setting to "HEAT" and checked the schedule is set correctly. We will now leave the system for a period of time to be managed through the APP and see if the Heating starts up outside the Schedule.

I will check your suggestions and record the settings.

Quick answer to your questions,  Google Thermostat replaced a SALUS unit two years ago, has worked fine over the two winters we had it running. I am not sure exactly  when (probably April 2024) or why I set the MODE to "OFF" for heating.

The Heating came on Randomly, no apparent pattern.

No recent work on the system.

I did move the thermostat very close to the base unit, s that may bean issue if too close! not sure about that .

I will make one change at a time, and record the changes made.

Many thanks for your respone.

Hi, @KeithLouden,

Thank you for your detailed response and for taking the time to troubleshoot the thermostat.

It seems you’ve identified a potential cause of the problem by changing the mode setting to "HEAT." It’s great that you’re monitoring the system closely to see if the problem persists.

Thank you for letting me know you will follow the troubleshooting steps in my previous post.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Ana
