3rd generation nest thermostat heating up - can I replace it?

My 6 year old 3rd gen thermostat has started getting warm to the touch and hence needed to be set at 30 Celsius in order to make the heating come on at all. Moving it right by a window and placing it on a metal cup has helped cool it down, but it is still reporting 5 degrees warmer than a thermometer placed right next to it. I suspect that the thermostat has an electrical fault, which is making it warm up. This is unlikely to be fixable, based on looking at other, similar threads.

However, my question is, can I just buy a new Nest Learning thermostat and connect it to my existing heat link, without rewiring anything? The thermostat is not connected to a wall, just on a stand and powered by the USB adaptor. If I need to get the entire system replaced, then I might as well go for a Nest E.

Hi there, thanks for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue, but I'm here to help. To answer your question first, you can pair a display that's not from the original box and it should work just fine. Google Store doesn't sell spare parts so you won't be able to get a thermostat display separately from us, but you might find one at a retailer or maybe an installer, but in that case we won't be able to assure you of the warranty of the product.

Now, since your device is 6 years old it surely is out of warranty for some time now, but I might be able to obtain a replacement if I take the case to our senior department. For this I'll need to create and document a case in our system, and I'll need a picture of the thermostat next to the thermometer. Please bear in mind that I can't promise you that I will obtain the replacement, but I'm willing to go ahead and try. Please let me know if you want to go ahead with this and I'll let you know what we need to do.

Hi Paul, it would be great if you could try to get a replacement display. Many thanks for the information - the fact that we can pair a new display to the existing Heat link will make life easier in any case.

Above is a link to a picture of the thermostat running at about 4 degrees hotter than the surroundings. If I remove the metal mug underneath it and put it away from the window, it goes all the way up to 28 or 29 Celsius.

Many thanks for your help.
