3rd generation thermostat must be very near to heatlink to connect

This morning, my Nest 3rd generation thermostat and heatlink suddenly wouldn't talk to each other from about 5 metres away and 1 wall. It's been set up like this for months working fine.

I tried reconnecting which failed and kept trying various resets and add a new heatlink using the code but nothing would work. Eventually it worked but with the stat about 50 cm away.

Now I can't take it much further away than that without the connection breaking.

I'm pretty sure the heatlink or the thermostat are faulty because everything else has been tried. It's about 5 years old so obviously not under warranty but I have everything under Google home so if I change to Hive or something else it won't be as integrated.

Are there any ways to do diags on the direct WiFi connection between the 2 e.g. signal strength etc? Any further factory reset of the stat available than just a long press?

No worries @Darrenm . There are multiple ways to locate it.

1. On the product box, if you still have it.

2. In the Nest app, if you have the thermostat there. Select the thermostat and tap on the symbol in the upper right corner to go to Settings> Technical info.

3. On the thermostat display if you can access the settings under Settings> Technical info> Display.

4. On the back of the thermostat display, if you take it off the base.
