AC not working. HELP!!

kls
Community Member

It’s 81 in my house and the AC is set to 70. NEST said 2.5hrs to reach temp. WOW, that’s ridiculous! 6hrs later & it’s 80. WHAT!  I don’t feel any cool air. How can I tell if the compressor is running? How can I fix this?
Thank you!

Is this a newly installed Nest thermostat or one that was previously working correctly?

I purchased the house last July. It worked last year, however, the basement was freezing, the upper level was OK, and the upstairs was very hot. I have an appointment for an AC technician to come out at the end of June to help with that problem.

One thing to remember is all thermostats are nothing but fancy switches. They tell the HVAC system when to turn on and when to turn off. The only time they have anything to do with how fast a system will heat or cool is if you have a multi-stage system and it will then tell the system when to turn on and off the other stages.

How fast your system heats or cools your home is a function of the HVAC system size and such.

Hey folks,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here in the community.

I'd like to jump in here and check if you've seen Patrick_Caezza's response about how every HVAC system differs and the time how fast they reach a certain temperature target or schedule.

Thanks for your assistance, Patrick_Caezza.

Best regards,

Ryan

So Patrick, are you saying my current AC system is too small or my current HVAC system is to small? If I upsized one of them my home would cool faster?

I did meet with a sales person that told me they would recommend replacing my system AC or HVAC system with the same size and I would continue to have the same problems. They said the only way to change that would be to invest in duct work for thousands of dollars. My home was built in 2003. Could that really be true with such a newer home?

This is the same thing mine is doing right now!! Can anyone help us with why this would happen.  We've had out nest thermostat for a few years!

Having the exact same issue. It was professionally installed yesterday.  Had it at 74 setting today and couldn't get below 78, NEVER had ac issues.  Worked fine before the nest, good old honey well.  No issues with ac only nest controlling my air.

When I called Google Nest, they had me shut off the HVAC electricity, switch the heat & AC wires, and then turn the AC on, which should blow heat, and then turn the heat on, which should blow cold air. If this works, put the wires back (Y1-yellow / W1-white). I believe this means the problem is with the round face cover.

Here’s how: shut off the HVAC electricity, pull off the round Nest cover, press down on Y1 button, so it pops up, to remove the yellow wire (heat), same for W1 wire (AC). Put white wire in Y1 & yellow wire in W1. Turn HVAC electricity on. Test as described above.

After testing reverse process, shutting off HVAC putting wires back, turn HVAC electricity back on.

Thanks for that info, kls. That's a good set of troubleshooting steps for anybody here to try.

For the others in the thread, have you tried those steps, or have you done any other troubleshooting efforts? If you have and have seen some results, let us know what you've found.

Thanks,

Jeff

EXACT SAME PROBLEM...Started yesterday out of the blue. I'm sick of it. Never had AC issues. Uggghhhhh...

Same here! Never had issues before but now it is not working. Says cooling but no air coming from vents. We are in the middle of a heatwave so this is not ideal. Any help from nest? No idea what to do.

I called an HVAC company and they said that the system power was tripped. Went in the basement and power cycled it (switched the power on and off) and it came on...

BUT he then said that the compressor looks bad. I'm not sure if this is all related or not but it seems very ironic.

So what's the resolve? Maintenance said the hvac is running perfectly. The unit has worked well for 5 months.

Now my thermostat problem is I can only change the temp manually. Otherwise it no longer pushes in, so I can’t get to settings (Wifi) or the schedule. The app didn’t work on my phone so I deleted it thinking a re-install would help. I can’t reinstall it though. I called Google, but they always take you through the same process with do you have cool air blowing out, checking the wires, switch the air/heat wires (last time that made it over 80 & it was reading off 9 degrees), take a picture of the wires & email it to me, and so on. I told the tech I knew how to do all of that and it was all good. What’s next? The tech treated me like an idiot. He asked me several times if I could push on the thermostat and then go to settings. He even wanted me to send a video of me trying to!!! What!! He refused to help me further unless I did everything he asked. I asked to speak to a manager and he told me he couldn’t transfer me. I asked him to have a manager call me. Nope. Couldn’t do that either. Fine, I’ll call back and ask for one. What’s my case number? He said he couldn’t give me that information. What!!!! Go back to India because all you do is read a script, I can’t understand most of what you’re saying and you’ve wasted 45 minutes of my life!!! I still can’t do anything with my thermostat.

I bought Google Mesh Router w/ 1 pod & have nothing but problems with that too. Wasted 3+ hours with its “easy” 10 min setup initially. Then it went off line and it took from 10pm-3:30am to fix it. I had to work at 6am! My internet service had me call Google. Google told me to call my internet service back and tell them xyz. I told them I didn’t want to play the back & forth game. I just wanted to reinstall so my internet worked. Google couldn’t do anything. The problem was my modem. My internet service told me they didn’t do xyz , the problem was the router & to call Google back. Finally I got them to agree to a 3 way call. That was interesting. I had enough of their insisting it was the others fault. I BEGGED Google to just help me reinstall the Wifi. Again, the 10min process was over 1.5 hours. Guess what I think of Google and their “customer service”.

My router continues to go in and out. I was told Google won’t replace it because it’s the modem. This rep also would not let me speak to a manager. Something’s serious wrong with Google. I’m done with them. Now finding a different unit to run my HVAC where I can get help & there is customer service. No one at Google cares.
