AC won't shut off on regular schedule

Last Sunday, we noticed the blower on the heat pump was acting erratically. It would shut off snf the outside unit would run. We called for service from the company that installed it. The tech came out, did truly a song and dance, and said I needed refrigerant and a clean and pull- on a unit that's less than 5 years old. He also said my issue were caused by the geo sensing on the nest and turned it off. Keep in mind that we've had that on since we've had it and it's never been an issue. The next day we called another company. He was much more thorough. He actually pulled panels and checked voltages, amps, resistance, contactor, and pressures. Of course the issue didn't happen the whole time he was troubleshooting. When he was checking pressures, it did happened- the blower shut off. He came inside and identified it as the ECM fan motor. It was under warranty, so he ordered the part and it could take a day or two. In the mean time, at night, the AC ran and wouldn't shut off. This is on top of the blower fan just being erratic, so I shut it down and let it run much less. The day after this, the fan was replaced. That night, the AC did not shut off. We did some searching, found a suggestion to pull power over all and to the outside unit and did that. This worked- when the unit hit the set point, it would shut off. We also left for a camping trip, so the unit went into eco mode. I watched the app non stop the whole trip. It ran with no issues- would hit the set point (78) and shut off. At no point did it run for more than 45 minutes an hour, even in the Florida heat. I was pretty convinced the issue was fine. Last night, on the way home I turned it off eco to regular schedule. It hit its scheduled points and shut off, no issues. We went to bed and I was awoken to the fact that it wasn't shutting off. Got up, checked the app, and it's ran for 7 hours straight. I can see the unit hit the set point and go a bit under, but it never shuts off. Any suggestions as to what to do here?

Hi @eeek5127,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I'm sorry to hear that you've been experiencing issues with your Nest Thermostat and heat pump system not shutting off on a regular schedule. I understand how frustrating this must be, and I appreciate you detailing all the troubleshooting steps you've already taken with the two different service companies. I'm glad to help you.

To troubleshoot further, could you please provide the following information?

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Are there any error messages on the screen of the thermostat?
  • Does the issue happen on heating only, cooling only, or both?
  • Have you experienced any power outages within the last few days or weeks?
  • Could you please send me a picture of the Nest Thermostat's wiring?

I look forward to your response so we can find a solution for you soon.

Regards,

Gabriela
