Google has announced that it's abandoning Europe for future Nest Thermostats. Second generation will be made obsolete from October. My question is when will 3rd generation be made obsolete?
When I first started buying Nest products (thermostats, smoke detectors, cameras), I was hugely impressed with quality and ability to mange on one app. Quality is still good, but can no longer manage on one app and now it looks like thermostats are on the way out in Europe. Massively disappointing.

Just got my email for my 2nd gen one, like you I have a 3rd gen one as well. Rotten behaviour by Google. Hope it backfires like Sonos - I don’t think Google cares though.
These are not disposable items, they are vital controls.
What is next, vital things like our Nest smoke alarms?
I think they have a cheek to offer a Tado one at £80

Sonos is a great example. From what I recall, they were going to ‘brick’ early Sonos products in exchange for a discount on new ones. There was a significant backlash from people who were very happy with their products and had bought them for the long term. Sonos acknowledged this and rose to the challenge, creating a separate app/controller for older variants, allowing owners to retain them in use while progressing technology for newer models. A win win!

Follow Up to my original post. Having checked the Google Home app, it does now appear to support Nest Protect. As far as I’m aware, this has only just happened after literally years of waiting, but it is very welcome and does mean one app can control everything. Until of course everyone in Europe is forced to ditch their Nest thermostats!
