Yesterday, the power was interrupted to my thermostat. This happened because the a/c drain line got clogged and water backed up tripping the safety float switch. The app knew what had happened - when I opened it to see what was up when the house started to feel warm, it cheerfully told me that the thermostat had lost power. It would have been really nice to get an alert from the nest app on my phone, or an email.
It seems like alerting when something is wrong would be pretty basic functionality for a "smart" thermostat.

Hello andy14,
Thanks for reaching out. I understand how receiving alerts and notifications is important for you, especially if you're not at home, so you would know about what's going on. I'd be happy to take a look into this for you.
Enabling push notifications for the Nest app and Google Home app would help. Try the steps here:
Have a look at this article and let us know if you need more help.
Thanks,
Mark
