Boiler not firing up

Juliet82

Hi,

A week ago me and my husband realised that our combi-boiler was not firing up when the house temperature was dropping bellow the set temperature value on the thermostat.

Initially we thought it could be a Thermostat->Heat Link connection issue but it was quickly disregarded after a few tests.

We are able to control the Heat Link with the phone, there is a click  (and green light blinking) when On and another when OFF but the boiler does not start…

Manual mode also has the expected effect on the Heat Link but boiler also does start.

To notice that there was no modification made to the system that has been working well for many years.

Thanks

Juliet

Hi there, thanks for reaching out! I'm so sorry to hear about this situation. Can you please let me know what type of thermostat you have? If you don't know you can check the Serial Number (Settings > Technical Info > Display or on the back of the display, above the QR code). For a 3rd gen it starts with 09, for 2nd gen it starts with 02 and for Nest thermostat E it starts with 15. Also, just to make sure, do you have a separate hot water tank?

Thanks, Larisa

Hi Larisa,

Thanks for addressing our issue.
The Serial NBR: 02AA01AC221407BL.
...and no, we do not have separate water tank.

Thank you for the information. Based on the fact that there is a clicking noise when turning the the heating on and off using the app would indicate that the command is reaching the display from the app and from the display it's passed on to the Heat Link which then moves the internal relay with an audible click.

Usually we expect to see a similar behaviour in system boilers with a separate hot water tank, as they usually have a separate valve that gets stuck even though a command is issued from the Heat Link. This is using the 3rd Generation one.

Since your unit seems to be a 2nd Generation thermostat, based on the serial number, the Heat Link would only have heating control terminals. But, as mentioned, since it is clicking, it would indicate it's working as expected. Also the manual mode seems to be working as expected as well.

What I could suggest in this case is if you are comfortable in doing so or are able to get an installer to have a look at the unit, to do a continuity test. To check the continuity and not the voltage through the terminals to see if it behaves as expected. If the test looks ok, than it is something else in the system that is causing this behaviour and if it does not have the expected results, it could be the thermostat.

Do I do have to let you know that since it seems to be a 2nd Generation unit, a unit that has not been manufactured now for several years, in case that it is determine that something is going on with the thermostat a replacement will not be possible. As much as I'd like to, the warranty is most likely expired and parts for that generation are no longer available.

Should you wish I can send you the continuity steps over email, to the email connected to your account here.

Hi Alex,

We have been experiencing the same issue but with a third generation and a hot water tank. There is a clicking noise but nothing is happening after that. What can we do to fix this?

Thanks,

Theo

Hi there @Theo1998 and thanks for reaching our community. I'm sorry you're experiencing this issue, but I'll do my best to sort it out. To begin with, have you tried to perform the click test with the Nest app and it didn't work? Also, have you checked if the boiler activates in the Manual mode, by pressing the button on the Heat Link?
