Brand new thermostat will not find WiFi

i’m guessing this is the third generation I just bought it the other day from Home Depot. I have two others in my house which were easy to install. The biggest problem is the app which is absolute garbage the third one I’m trying to install now is right above the router and I’ve restored the router and I’ve been through the procedure so many times it’s mind-boggling. I keep getting a message that says “something went wrong “somebody mentioned resetting the unit I don’t know how to do that other than taking the batteries out. I’m extremely frustrated and ready to exchange the unit thermostats work great once they’re up and running.

It’s definitely frustrating when a new thermostat won’t connect, especially when your other units worked fine. If it keeps giving the “something went wrong” message even near the router, it may just need a full reset. On most models you can reset it by going to Settings > Reset on the thermostat screen (removing the battery alone usually isn’t enough). Also make sure your WiFi is 2.4 GHz, since some thermostats won’t connect to 5 GHz.

You might try doing a full factory reset on the thermostat before exchanging it — sometimes the new models need that to refresh their WiFi module. And honestly, the app glitches are common, so don’t rely on the first error message.

Hi @MTF,

Thank you very much for contacting the community! I understand the issue you've been experiencing. You recently bought a Nest Thermostat at Home Depot, but you've run into trouble installing this specific unit. When you try to add it to your phone via the app, you get a "something went wrong" error message, unlike with your other two Nest Thermostats, which were easy to add. Don't worry, I am here to help!

I appreciate that you took the time to try several troubleshooting steps, such as resetting the router and removing the thermostat batteries, but see that the issue persists. I know this can be frustrating. To provide you with the most appropriate troubleshooting steps, I’d like to ask a few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have? Here’s a helpful article about how to identify your thermostat model.
  • You mentioned receiving a “something went wrong” error message, but have you seen any other messages? If so, which ones?
  • Are you using the Nest app or the Google Home app to set up this thermostat?
  • What is the make and model of the primary device (phone or tablet) you are using to set up your thermostat?
  • Have you tried using a different phone or tablet to add the thermostat?

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,
Eduardo
