Bricked my Nest Thermostat?

laxpinkie
Community Member

I inserted a pin into the hole at the bottom of the Nest Thermostat thinking I needed to do this — like with the Nest Hello — to remove the thermostat device from the wall to change the batteries.

The device will not power on. I’ve tried removing the batteries, waiting several minutes and reinserting them, but I have had no luck getting the device to power back on, aside from an infrequent dim white rectangle flashing on the screen.

Anyone else experience a similar issue and have any idea on how to resolve? I did see this in another thread, even copied text as it's my exact issue, but every forum I've seen suggests it's done for. Help!

I'm unsure what hole you stuck a pin in, but it sounds like you fried it.

Definitely a little hole at the bottom looks just like one where similar to the Nest doorbell, which we also have, and is used with one of those "keys" that looks like a straight pin to remove it from where it's mounted.

Really bad product design since I read of at least a few others who did the same thing (also in the attempt to remove the **bleep** thing from the wall).

Help would still be appreciated but I think the only recourse is to bite the bullet and buy a new thermostat unless you have a better thought

Hey, get anywhere with this? I've done the same...

Like a free replacement device due to inconsistent product design or a solution to the problem? Unfortunately no  😪

Hello folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for assisting, Jeran and Jake

@laxpinkie,  I understand that uninstalling the Nest Thermostat 2020 model can be confusing on your part, but I'd be happy to take a look at it for you.

  • Could you please share with us a photo of your thermostat's wiring?
  • Is it not turning on after you insert a pin into the hole?
  • Please ensure that the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box is turned on, and make sure that all wires are properly connected on its base.
  • Inspect all the pin connectors for any visible damage.

@bengilbertuk, thanks for posting on this thread. I'd love to know more about this. Could you please tell us more about what happened?

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

To clarify, ours had been an operation without being hardwired and we were only taking it off the wall to change the battery.

It had been working fine prior to removal aside from having low battery power. No it doesn't turn on at all with any new batteries.

Thanks!
