Conneting a Nest E Thermostat to the Google Home App

I recently rented a new apartment that has a Nest E thermostat. I got it all set up on my network with no problems. The issue comes when I try to connect it to my Home App. When I scan the QR code, it tells me that it is not valid. When I try to use "Add A Different Way", there is no way to select a Nest thermostat. Am I just out of luck, and have to do the programming and everything manually?? (Oh the first world horror of it all!!)

Hi @dan1964

You can't manually add a thermostat to the Home app that is setup using the Nest app.

When you install a thermostat in the Nest app, the thermostat should automatically appear in the Google Home app if you’re using the same account in both apps, using the same home structure, and have assigned the thermostat to a room in the Nest app. If any of that isn’t true, you’ll need to go ahead and fix those issues to see if you need to try the steps below at all.

Assuming all of the above is true. try these steps:

  1. Open the Nest app and follow the “Create another home in the Nest app” steps linked below to create a new temporary home structure:
Manage homes and products with the Nest app - Google Nest Help
  2. Open the Google Home app, find and delete the home structure you just created by following the “Delete a home” steps linked below:
Share a home and devices in the Google Home app - Google Nest Help

This forces the two apps to sync and your thermostat should now appear in the Google Home app.

Unfortunately this did not work.

Not to worry, let's go through this in detail:

  1. You're logged into both apps using the same account/email address?
    • Check the app settings to make sure this is the case.
  2. You're looking at the same home structure in both apps?
  3. You've assigned the thermostat to a room in the Nest app?
    • Tap the thermostat in the Nest app and make sure it's assigned to a room.

I was not aware of a Nest app, only the Google Home app.  So I will need to install the Nest app to make this work?
