I do not have a heat pump system, but that is the default on my Google Nest Thermostat. My primary heat source is gas. In heat/cool mode the thermostat turns on the A/C unit even if it should be calling for heat. Emergency heat does use the gas heat on the furnace. Does Emergency Heat work in Heat/Cool mode or just in Heat mode only?

Hi MOBv1,
Thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation. Let me take a look at this for you.
Emergency Heat only works in heating mode. You can view this article by clicking here. Also, a few questions: what type of Nest thermostat do you have? Who installed the Nest thermostat? Can you help us with the wiring photo of your Nest Thermostat base and the photo of your HVAC control board where the other end of your thermostat wires are connected?
I'll look forward to your response.
Best,
Zoe

Zoe, thank you for responding. To begin yo answer your questions, I installed the thermostat myself (my father was in the HVAC business for 60+ years and I’ve wired and programmed numerous thermostats. The thermostat I have is the Nest Thermostat (not the Learning thermostat). As for the rest, I will get the photos for you, but it will have to wait as I installed it in our lake home and won’t be going there again for at least a week. I will notify you via return response to your email when I have them posted.

Hey MOBv1,
Thanks for the follow-up information. Do you know where the orange wire was previously connected from your old thermostat? If not, please send us a photo of your HVAC control board where the other end of your thermostat wires are connected. There is a high chance that your thermostat wires are not compatible with the Nest Thermostat 2020 that you installed since you have a total of 7 wires.
I'll look forward to hearing from you.
Best,
Zoe

The 2nd picture I sent was of the control board on the furnace.

Hello MOBv1,
Thanks for getting back to us, but it seems that you haven't sent the photo of your HVAC control board where the other end of your thermostat wires are connected. Could you send it again? It will help us move forward.
Thanks,
Zoe
